Parktronic display hump question...

Does anyone have the dimensions for the display hump on the parktronic grill? Need to know how big the front opening is (and whether there is room to make it bigger) as well as the depth.

Thanks...

i dont think there is much room to make it bigger. its narrow, and the display actually slides in place in the grill behind the clear screen.

I saw one forum member who integrated his radar detector (V1, I think) into an empty Parktronic display).

The original display module is boomerang shaped (bend in the middle) so its probably not that easy to tell what will fit in the void it lives in.

Hmm...

Can anyone take some detailed pics, possibly with a ruler to help me out? If anyone has access to, or pictures of the underside that would be awesome!

If I decide on doing one of my gazillion ideas, I will most likely be doing some modification to the piece, I just want an idea to narrow down the ideas.

Thanks, thats somewhat helpful, just got to find the dimensions of the V1 remote display. I was thinking of doing something similar but take apart the remote display and make my own custom display that would be flush, so that when it is off its invisible. The only thing I dont like is the radar unit for the V1, I wish it had remote sensors. Why hasnt any company made a radar unit that mounts on the roof? Build it into one of those shark fin doodads or something like that!

I'm not sure yet on what exactly I'm doing. I would like to put a radar detector there but don't like that you still need to have the V1 unit out. And other untis I saw, I'm a little iffy on how good they are, but I got a few ideas. If I do put the V1 display there, I will buy blueish white LEDs if I can find a similar LCD display for the digits and mount them to a piece of tinted lexan. Probably paint the inside of it to give the shape for the arrows. I'm also thinking of a digital boost gauge there but probably not. I don't know just yet, but when I do, I will definately let everyone know.

The remote module measures only 1.0-in. H x 2.5-in. W x 1.2-in. D.

Actually looking at some pics and dimensions... I just might be able to pull this off!

Axxis, do you recall how much room you had behind the display, and how much room under it? Do you have the premium sound with the speaker there?

I think I'm gonna discuss this with the Bank of Birthdays today!!!

behind the display (hole) there is about 3-4 inches.. and under that there 4-5 inches.. Im guessing here because I dont remeber correctly. When I take it off again I will shoot some pics.

That mesh is actually a AC vent. The parktronic display has a turn knob in the front of the mesh that controls open/close of that AC vent on the dash. Mine is always closed.

Oh, if that is the case, I'll have plenty of room.

I know it's an AC vent, but there is also a speaker in there, at least on my car with the entertainment package. Does the speaker get blocked? I don't want to loose any speakers, they are too precious!!! I need all the volume I can get.

Been following this thread for a while. Just got hold of a V1 1.8! Wouldn't you guys still want access to the concealed displays knob though? Because then you can't quite shield the parktronic hump completely with tinted lexan or so.. unless you also cut out a small hole for the knob.. will bookmark this .

That's why you buy the remote remote with the concealed display. The concealed display only has a mute button. Can't really control the V1 with it. With the remote remote, you can completely control the V1. Even people who do stealth displays in the rear view mirrors, do you ever see buttons sticking out of the mirror?

Its Done!

Finally I finished it! Thanks to Steve and his crew for getting me the part (Back in October, also got the iPod kit which I've used everyday since I got it!).

I did not use the Valentine 1 because I did not want to have the detector itself in view. I used a Whistler 3450 Pro. ($180) This has a remote display and front mounted radar detector and a windshield mounted front and rear laser. While it may not be as good as the V1, it works pretty well for its price and it is also hidden.

Since I didnt have exact dimensions for the parktronic display, I took a gamble and purchased it anyway along with the radar detector for my birthday. It turned out the radar display was too big to fit in the hump so I tried to remove the display and button board from the main circuit board and then solder in 3 inch long ribbon cable so that I can mount the display in the hump. Unfortunately I screwed up and fried the circuit board. So I got Whistler to sell me another display unit, and I was not going to try to repeat my first attempt. I reomved the window from the parktronic hump and fabricated a piece of aluminum to fit on the out side of the hump. That gave me enough room to mount the board behind the hump. I then used my milling machine to cut out the holes for the display and buttons (of course, I removed the circuit board from its plastic housing that its supposed to be in). The radar detector uses straight 1/32 stereo phono plugs in the back, and I did not have enough room to plug them in, so I soldered on two jacks from radio shack on short wire so that I can plug in the radar unit and laser unit. I also had to do the same for the power. I also took off the onboard speaker and soldered short wires to that since it was also in the way, I glued the speaker to the aluminum piece. I ran the three wires (power, radar, laser) behind the guage cluster. Surprisingly it came out real easy using a bent wire hanger. I had to cut away some of the dash under the parktronic display to resolve some clearance issues with the wires, but its under the dash vent piece and will never be seen again. The radar unit was mounted in the front grille.

When it gets warmer I am going to run a wire to make it ignition controlled, along with my XM unit. I also may make a lexan piece to go in front to make it completely smooth and make the buttons look nice, but all the hardwork is done.

Well since the car already has a temp display, I stuck the radar temp probe into the airbox. The actual temp was 43F (The car was on). Interestingly, in 43F temps, the air in the airbox is ~65-70F at idle and speeds below like 30 Mph. After that it starts to cool down some but not much. On the parkway going 65 Mph, the temps dropped to ~50F... Next mod is to try and insulate the airbox and change the cloth hose to CF due to its low heat transfer.

I would have put the probe in the plumbing aft of the intercooler. Nice to see what the actual intake charge temps are.

Very cool mod, BTW. My parktronic display just lights up the moment. I wan't to turn it into a VU meter for the stereo. If that idea doesn't pan out, its gonna get a digital boost gauge.

I thought of that, as that would be better info. But I did not know if the temp probe can handle the temps that might be seen, and it is just a rubber insulated probe on a wire, so I would need to drill a hole and silicone it in, which I would rather not do.
