2002 leftovers!

I went to my local MB dealer and was surprised to find at least 10-15 MB 2002 c-class vehicles sitting on the lot. I am in the Midwest and this is a low volume dealer. I called my home area on the east coast and the salesman told me that there were between 35-40 2002 c-class vehicles leftover on his lot. Are these vehicles not selling as much because of the economy, or are there possibly an overabundance produced this year? I have a feeling that the economy and some of the price gouging going on with other car manufacturers are effecting sales. I for one am waiting until my portfolio recovers some and am more hesitant to buy a higher priced vehicle when it is not absolutely necessary. Could this be a trend? Let me know what you all think and if you have had the same experience. Maybe some of you all in the market last year can let us know if the high numbers at dealers were similar last year. And are we able to get better deals nowthat there are so many leftovers this year?
Thanks,
Yac
PS. I was able to get $1500 below invoice one month ago for a C240, I wonder if deals are even better now

When I bought my 2001 C240 in Sept 2001...new 2002 were already out....the dealer in Tucson were not very flexible with the price. There is a new MB dealer opening up in the Phoenix area, in Chandler, so that makes it 3 MB dealers in the Phoenix area. I was told by one of the Phoenix dealers (Schumacher) that I would do better if I bought the car up there because they do higher volume. I am not sure if this is true or not. I friend of mine bought a S430...walked into the dealer offering to pay cash and still they did not give him a price break ( this was a dealer in Texas - not sure which one). I guess deals are regional and by the dealer itself.

Just curious, why would you buy a 2001 C240 without getting a price break if you could have gotten a 2002?

Actually, I did get a price break since my car was originally it was a European delivery car. It had 1000 miles on it and they did reduce the price - gave me the new car warranty etc etc. Plus they did not have any 2002 C240 with 6spd at that time.

I think the economy is still having an effect on MB cars from the volume of sales that may be down lately. Just a thought,
Yac

Someone mentioned in another thread that because of the dot-crash, a lot of bankrupt CEOs and associates had to flood the market with cheap, used Benzs that are relatively new. The faltering of many large corporations definitely has a hand in the sale of Benzs.

Sounds like an urban legend to me. The higher-ups in most corps are well taken care of before the company goes under. I'd like to see some real proof of this before I bought it.

Maybe not the CEOs themselves, but I observed that this is was essentially the case here in the SF Bay Area. Last year I was looking at potentially buying a used C36/43 and there were about a dozen of them for sale in the immediate area and most were listed for a long time (most for several weeks at least). With this combination of factors, I felt it would have been quite easy to secure a pretty good deal on such a low volume vehicle. At the time I attributed it to dot-bombers having to unload cars they could no longer afford. There was even an article at the time in the SF Chronicle where the sales manager at Autobahn motors was quoted as saying that business had dropped so much (from what he had become accustomed to during the craziness) that he was now spending most of his time writing checks refunding deposits.

Cheers, BT
