i hear the hoen's do a good job, also, i have a few links for this mod since its something im interested in but havent gotten around to yet...
this is an error free (or it comes with resistor not sure..) LED setup
http://www.e92-lighting.com/products..._A-404-39.html
and so is this one
http://www.pyspeed.com/product-p/dash-8022.htm
but again, if you want to stay away from LED, then Hoen's do a good job with the whitish/blue light

Do not buy bulbs at pep boys, auto zone, etc. They carry very few LED's in general, and if they do, they will not be designed to be error free (there is a resistor to trick you car into thinking they are 5W bulbs). If you buy the regular hyper white bulbs, they really do not look that good.
Do buy LED bulb replacements. They look much better than hyper white bulbs. The ones on eBay for $15/pair that omg its nate gave a link for will not cause errors and look great. I bought a set myself from a different seller on ebay for $19 a pair and am very satisfied with them.
Hoen's are nice, but VERY expensive. The $15 ones on ebay will do just fine.

I still dno bout these super white bulbs. The color focus is on the edges of the plate too much.
If it were more central to the plate I woulda done it already.

2002 Mercedes Benz C230 Coupe
I finally cracked the resistor issue with the coupe...lol. After like 2 tries one day I was like OK...this is too much...so I spent an entire afternoon and removed all the hatch trim pieces and finally was able to access the license plate wires and installed the resistors. Now I can use any LED...bright/dim/white/blue/blacklight...and swap them without opening up the entire trim whenever I get bored...Its awesome!
And the kicker...total cost = $2 (resistors) + $5 (any Ebay LED's) + about 3 hours labor.
Let me know if any of you guys have questions.

it literally took longer to unscrew the cover than to actually install the bulb and ive never had one go out or one error message

I just installed the Hoen 6418 bulbs and they look great! Bright white but not ricey. I ordered them from the Hoen website, $20 a pair plus shipping. Steep for a couple of $2 bulbs but, whatever...

so i've been searching for this for a while, and read all the pages in this thread (god my eyes hurt) and still havent found it
How do you replace the lights on the sedan? i unscrewed the 2 screws holding the plastic covers over the bulb and they didn't budge, and i didn't feel smart/safe trying to pry at it.. do i hvae to remove the trunk liner and go in through the back?
I'm not replacing the whole unit with LEDs, i bought the Hoen bulbs so just need to swap the bulbs out
