What happens when you order a car and not want it

I have always wondered when you go to your dealer and put a deposit to build a MB with all the colors that you want and options and then the car is delivered to the dealer and you have decied that ummm nope I do not want the car and the car would be a hard sell for the dealer because of the options and colors you have picked what happens to you or the car. I know you loose your deposit but else happens.

I remember someone saying that the deposit was fully refundable unless the dealer had you sign something that stated otherwise.

Oh lets say a bright mint lime color with organge interior with navigation and a desposit was $1000. What I am trying to say is what happens when you get the car and then say I do not like it or just say naa I do not want this car I am want as BMW . What happens to the person who orders and what do dealers do. I always wondered what happens

a quarter mile at a time
I actually wanted a Citron Green C350 but they got rid of the color. Oh well. If they make the mistake of not having you sign anything, you will get your money back, and they will have just another car on thier lot. If you did sign something, most likely the deposit is history.

Now I don't know about other car brands or models, but on a C class what factory options are there that the dealer really couldn't sell to somone else? Even fully loaded, I think somone would be in the market.

I have seen some crazy exterior factory colors on other cars (mainly that strange orange/brown) that if I was the dealer I would say you ordered it and you own it....

Also, I have just seen some wrong color combinations on Mini Cooper's.

In my experience you get your deposit back, and they have a car to sell to someone else.
If you ordered an AMG model, they are quite happy to have gotten the 'extra AMG allocation'.
If you ordered an unusual and perhaps not too likeable color combination? You would still get your money back, and they would be slightly less than happy that they've now got a white elephant to get rid of.....

I would consider the deposit lost. If the dealer decides to refund your deposit, consider yourself extremely lucky.

You probably signed a purchase agreement when the dealer ordered the car. It may have said something like you promised to buy the car at a certain price upon arrival of the car. The dealer could, theoretically, enforce this contract. Most dealers would not choose to force you into a car your don't want, because of the bad customer relations it will create.

All dealers occasionally lose a sale due to: no financing, divorce, death, job loss, etc. Be humble and they will probably work with you. Good luck.

Nope. When I first ordered my car, I did it over the phone and signed absolutely nothing (except for the $1k deposit check I later brought in). They later ended up locating the exact car I wanted on it's way to the Long Beach Port headed to a different dealership, so they did a dealer trade and had it re-routed for me. I could have gotten my deposit back at any point in time, but decided to just let them hold it and apply it to my down payment.

i think it depends on the state law. In California, if you don't want the car, the dealer will refund your deposit. At least, that's what the salesman told me would happen.
