2002 C240 rear rotor Will not come off!

I am in the middle of doing a rear brake pad & rotor replacement on my wifes C240. The pads have been squeeling for a while and are worn a bit.

I tend to buy an extra set of rotors for all my cars, so when brake replacement time come around I can have new pads with new rotors.

I have 2 problems:

1. I cannot get the rear rotor off. I have the 5 lug bolts removed, and the little T30 TORX screw removed as well. I've been spraying the rotor / hub area with WD40 for hours now, and I cannot get the rotor off. Do I have to remove the axle nut and remove the rotor and hub together as an ***'y? If so, what is the procedure for tightening the hub?

2. I started this brake job thinking it was like any other brake job that I have done on all of my cars over the years. When I was searching the archives to see how to remove the rear rotors, I notice all this stuff about not opening the door, removeing the SBC and taking the keys away from the car (all three of which I didn't do).

Help please.

C240 does not have SBC, and you should be happy for that.

tap the rotors with a hammer. all over, especially on the hub part. just give it some love taps, and some elbow grease, and it WILL come off.

Yes, I know this is a 2 year old thread.

I just wish I had found this post before I spent 2 hours pounding on and spraying my rear rotor this last weekend. When I went to release the parking brake for something else and my rotor just fell off. Geez. Talk about feeling like a 'tard......

Ha, yes interestingly, the parking brake presses against the inside of the rotor!

Mine wouldn't budge until I heated the rotor, not the hub AND hit it w/ WD-40.

Identical results on both sides.

....Uh, that is what I had been doing. The point to resurrecting this thread was that some of us moe-rons might be too dumb to know to release the parking brake and then knock the rotor off.

But did you drink a beer while waiting for the WD-40 to soak in? lol!

1. lugs out
2. torx screw removed
3. parking brake released
4. spray center hub sprayed with WD-40 or liquid wrench (liquid wrench works best)
5. have one, maybe two beers (it's a time thing)
6. tap hub with hammer

I know this is an old thread but I just did this today.

1. Find level ground
2. Lift it up
3. Release Parking Brake (This is a big one!)
4. Liquid Wrench is best (I did one with LW and one with WD40)
5. Don't beat the hell out of your old rotors just in case your new ones don't fit. Use a cheap Puller with three 'teeth'. Autozone PN: 25919
6. Take your time. The second one will only take 15 minutes.

Hi folks:Just curious this procedure also works on 260e,300e 87,88,89?
I tried to do today at a pick your parts place today (my learning center), but I found the emergency brake has its own brake shoes. Then if I release the emergency brake cable the rotor can be removed.
Thanks

E brake shoes

My C240 has 189680 miles on it. I have never changed the E brake shoes. I have never adjusted either. I would not worry if it has plenty of meat on it.

What I learned and understand if I'm not wrong is the e brake shoes work only when the emergency brake is applied.
Thanks

tammyjoe, the rotors can be really difficult to get off. the best thing to do is to get a rubber or wood mallet and swing it at the edge of the rotor from the inside toward the outside. so start from under the car and swing outwards, toward where the wheel would be. do this a few times and it should come off. if it doesn't, double check that the parking brake and the set screw is off. if they are, youre not hitting the rotor hard enough with the mallet. good luck.
