I was smoked by a C200 kompressor with the same engine M271
until I stopped at the road junction. Along came with this young gentleman winding down his windows with his thumbs up. I give him a thumbs up and when the traffic light turns green, I floored it and no way can I catch up with him...
It is totally unbeliveable..... I gave up and 2 blocks down, he pulled over and I was amazed with the performance of his vehicle. I asked him on the mods he has done and guess what ? nothing except for the change of his stock headers to a performance header... no chipping of his ECU, neither any change of his crank pulley, everything was stock except the manifold. The headers was purchased off in Asia when he was on a business trip....Can a performance header delivers what it takes ? any M271 performance headers out there and how much will it cost ?

I guessed after getting a decent header into my vehicle, I should give him a ring to try out with his vehicle ....

I look forward to seeing dyno results... I want ceramic coated or even a polished look that have EOM fitmet for the O2 sensor(s). I can't wait to see what Flip has cookin...

That is a lot of power for an inline 4 engine to pick up from headers.
:p :p Coz thats unbelievable

Now let's get down to the numbers....As you know that my SLK 200 is equipped with the M271 engine and the stock BHP is 163 at the crank...
With the installation of the Kleemann Pulley coupled with the K-Box, I dynoed my vehicle and the numbers were promising...achieved 154 HP at the wheels which turns out to be approx. 200 BHP at the crank....
The M271 header was custom made by an exhaust freak...After several days of work out, he completed the job and insist that I go for the dyno as he is keen to know the numbers...
Yet I must say is awesome...dynoed with the customized M271 header and it turns out at 172 HP at the wheels, approx 223 BHP at the crank....So we are looking at almost 20 HP gains with the new header...
I feedback the numbers to the exhaust freak and he wants to tweak it by altering some dimensions of the various bends as well as the pipe diameters...he claims that we can achieve at least 28HP gains...
I will be removing the header tomorrow leaving in his good hands to work on it for further improvements....I will post pics of the dyno after his effort in making this successful.
Meanwhile, here is a pic of the header installed in my vehicle...as you can see, it has been wrapped up with the thermal heat material....
Will keep you guys posted....with the latest dyno results after the rework...
This just helps my case that MB used the manifold they did to keep the 230 away from the 320. Even if they didnt use headers, a smoother design would probably bring the 189 HP to ~200. Some one will say "Why spend $8K for 15 HP more."

Goodwin contacted me via email and informed me of your enthusiasm on the M271 header installed in his vehicle. He said that I can locate you here.
You can expect dyno gains of 28 BHP. This headers are made of 304 polish stainless steel. Here are some pics for your interest, they are fresh from the oven....

How can I get that piece of header ? where are you based ? He told me that he was on a business trip outside the states...
I am a serious fan of this header...
. Haha. Pretty nice design yeah? Soon my peeps!flip
?Just wanted to use a new smiley!

However, I'm still skeptical this would have been the method. The software and pully are far cheaper ways to limit HP. A cast iron manifold is standard nowdays, and the EPA loves it, not to mention the NVH boys. So, all things being equal, meaning cast turd manifolds on all the engines, v6 and 1.8, its likely they had to 'work harder' to get the 1.8 up to its current 189HP. Do you see what I'm saying?
Its far more likely, given the goals of great fuel economy, cheap construction, and decent performance, that choices were made to optimize the engine in a way that its hi specific output was the result of large(for a factory setup) amounts of boost...not high flow head designs, headers, agressive cams or high RPM operation. When the boost is on, the engine performs decently, without it, its a bit of a slug, but the fuel economy is excellent. High Flow head and headers are 'overhead' that you pay for even when youre not using them. The supercharger is 'on demand' power....youre not paying the price(in fuel consumption) for it, when its not being used.
If the headers help...great. Lets see some real numbers on a before and after dyno, and how much does it cost?
And if this guy is that good, when can I get one for my M111
