I took my shift boot off yesterday (thanks to the instructions on this thread) and cleaned undernieth. I have been trying to get the gunk cleaned out for months.

A tip that will make sure you don't hit yourself in the head...Start by using a thin card. I found using the corner of the card at the corner of the trim piece was the easiest place to slide it under. Then, slide the card around to the front. That is where a latch is (the other is on the back). Now, slide another card under the first card. Keep sliding more cards under until it pops out.

This will save you from tearing up your credit cards and ripping up the wiring.

I'm looking for the PN of a black or grey shift boot for a manual c230 coupe.

I need the kind where you can put an aftermarket knob on top... not the kind that is connected seemlessly (like the one i have now).

I'm open to both aftermarket or stock shift boots as long as it fits. I prefer stock because of fitment, unless anyone has good experience.

When I broke off a portion of my knob assembly, I was told at the time that they only sold the whole knob assembly as a unit (from the trim piece that goes underside the center console all the way up to the knob itself), and it was I think around $450. Things could have changed, but I'd be surprised.

Once you stray away from stock boots/knobs, it gets to be hard to make things work out perfectly. The trim piece that goes underneath the center console is very weak, so you might break it if you try to get the bottom of your new boot to attach to it. Then, like you've alluded to, the transition from the boot to the new knob would be ugly if you cut up the old boot.

My solution: I've got a Sparco Racing shift knob, a Wheelskins boot (will be replacing with alcantara eventually), and a Simoni gated shift surround that I've attached to the center console. That way, it's a seamless transition from one piece to the next, but was a real PITA to get everything and install it (twice, since I bought Mystic Blue designo trim from Steve a couple of years back).

Can anyone tell me the part number of the boot that comes with C7 (short throw shifter) on the coupe?
Just the leather boot part, it is in 2 piece compared to the regular one that I have which is in one piece with the knob.

Heres a pic of the plastic locking collar. Turn 1/4 turn counter-clockwise then pull the knob off.

My apologies for bringing this up again, but I have gone through the entire thread and I got as far as getting the knob off, pretty easy actually, just pull straight up. Now I can not get the boot and trim ring off. Where are the clips holding the boot and how are they released? Especially if any one has a photo, I would much appreciate it.

Guys, I have tried without success, to get the knob removed from the boot.I am becoming expert at getting the knob off the shaft but that's as far as I get. Please, does anyone have detailed steps to get the shift boot off the knob and install new knob?

In the photos in my post listed above, the white ring at the base of the knob has to be removed. Just push the tabs in a bit and slide down. Then the boot will come off.

Amazingly I am not getting further than removing the knob from the shaft. This is what I am seeing then and can't for the life of me see how you would get the boot off! Any specific steps would be very helpful, and thanks to all!

I'll go ahead and ask the obvious question:

have you held the knob in place from the top, and from the bottom, turned the ridged cone there? On most MB knobs, that would separate the two pieces.

I've never seen an assembly like yours. I do know that, on the non-C7-equipped 02 ccoupes, the knob/boot was like Donnie & Marie - completely inseparable.

Though that looks to me like you should be able to twist and separate. If not, you'll have to just get a knob/boot combo on your own that you like, and that looks ok when combined, then figure out a way to get the boot to work with the trim piece at the bottom.

I faced the same problem. lol! you should squeeze a part of it then some locks will loosen. i think.. look inside the lock.. but me? i totally got so pissed I got a hammer and broke the thing. lol! I bought a new gaiter then i dint have time to do the fitment then i bought an aftermarket sparco shift knob then i again dint install it coz of the gaiter.. so i've been driving around without a boot for several months now. BUT! i got a whole assembly arriving today! well thats what thetracking info said.. $50 shipped. i had to wait so patiently to get that deal. comes with the knob, gaiter, chrome trim, and even the lever. basically its the whole shifting unit.

This is just crazy. I did try to twist the cone shaped piece but that seems fixed to the shaft somehow. You hate to break this stuff cause it costs so much to replace. LOL. Am looking for tabs to squeeze to separate the boot but no luck.

i installed my new one yesterday. yes there are 4 tabs. take off the lock and you'll see it. (lock = the one that locks the shift knob from the shaft)

OK you guys, I am going to try to twist the locking collar and get it off the shaft but if it breaks.....my wife will not be happy!! let you know what happens, with pics.
