it's not the cut-off date of the models, it's the Climatronic assembly itself.
Some are very quirky.
Steve installed mine on a 2003 C-Coupé a couple of years ago and has worked flawlessly ever since.

Steve tried 3 different w203 modules on mine and even 2 R171 modules on it and they didn't work

Yes, all of the features of the original climate control work with the digital climate control. The rest feature also works. However, the passenger vent controls do not work because there is only one fan unit. The vent control is controlled by the driver's controls but I leave the control set to automatic and just adjust the temperature--it works great! In addition, the charcoal feature does not have any affect because my vehicle is not equipped with the charcoal filter. Holding down the charcoal button will roll up the windows and shut the sunroof. Holding it down again will return the windows and sunroof to their previous position.

Bought the digital controller from ebay Germany listing. I can confirm mine works, just installed it today 
. It is a plug and play. It will require a reset from Stardiagnose, but yes it can be done! I had my mechanic in authorized MB shop did the swap. My car is a w203 2006 make.

If you buy the part and plug it in, it does not work? Do you really need the Stardiag?

2002 C230 Sportcoupe automatic climate control unit
I just installed it on my 2002 C230 coupe and it works great except the windshield vents are constantly on and producing heat. Although the front vents are producing cool air. Any ideas ? does this mean I need the stardiag ?
**update: I called MB service and they indicated that it needs stardiag. I should mention that the user manual in the car has the automatic climate control unit in it. So this is not foreign to the car. it seems it simply needs a star diag. I will be taken the car in on monday I will update you if anyone is interested.
BTW I got the unit from ebay brand new for $150 including shipping. installation was very easy, i can post instructions if anyone needs it.

Let me add myself to here also -- This is one of those upgrades that I really want along with passive tire pressure monitoring...
