Check the Mercedes website. www.mbusa.com They have a certified Pre-owned section. Great resource. I use it to check on my own car when I don't have my brochure right next to me.

Mercedes is gone physically, but still in my heart.
Yep I have a 2003 6spd C240, smoothest shifting ever. Although, you have to shift A LOT down low and it can get to be some work driving around town. Usually at 25mph I'm in low-mid 3rd gear instead of with past cars high second. But it's definitely worth it.

The C240 i bet feels better in manual as well. Well, most cars do.
The C230 Kompressor Sports sedan has a high propensity to rev up to the high RPM segment. Thus, one should be a bit careful, especially when driving both automatic and manual.

I agree, the C230 is faster than the C240 too actually. More fuel efficient as well. Not to mention, more sporty and attractive in my eyes.

I drove a C240 six-speed when the car first came out--2001? I had two issues with the car:
1. Low redline/limiter--around 6,000 I think
2. Tiny tach + smooth engine = hard to tell when you're getting near the limiter
Essentially I felt I had to shift before things ever got exciting with this engine. Hopefully the C230 is better is this regard, but I've only driven it with automatic.

6000 RPMs isn't that low actually. It's about right for a gasoline engine.
the BMWs for your year were also redlining at about the same RPMs, nowadays, they redline at something slightly higher.

How could you be complaining about the smooth engine? That's the beauty of it all, it's a 6spd manual that is smoother than anything I've ever driven. I don't know about you, but in my eyes a C240 isn't a car to be pushed around and beaten on to 6000rpms so why complain? It's a car built for comfort and luxury, if you're looking for speed, you picked the wrong car. Although, I WILL say the gearing is a little high as I'm already in 3rd gear around 25-30mph, but that's ok, it makes the car more fuel efficient being able to drive in low 3rd around town instead of high 2nd.

I would say it depends which style you like...
The C240 feels power anytime, while the c230 have to rev it up for the speed. I personally like the feel of C240 more over the C230... but of course, the C230 is zippier, especially with 6MT

I've got a 01 C240 6speed. I'd driven past it for several weeks before I stopped and looked. When I noticed it was a stickshift, I went home and picked up the wife and brought back to the dealer and she gave me her blessings. I gonna gradually start upgrading components. It runs great and is super clean it is very well maintained and I look forward to doing the work on it myself. Sixspeeds are kinda rare, so if you get one you'll probably want to hold on to it. My wife wants a beemer, I'll drive her avalon and upgrade the 6 speed on the weekends. The dealer told me it was driven in germany and shipped by previous owner, I don't know how true that story is. It looks like and americanized benz to me.
