Carplay upgrade

Has anyone installed a unit like this in their 2012 coupe or convertible, if so which one did you get? This is the unit I'm looking at --> https://www.4x4shop.ca/

This is my dash so you can see what model I'm trying to retrofit.

I have the android 12.3" version from this company but I have not installed it yet. Still debating if I want that or just the module. It is a very steaight forward install as I have done it on the W204.

I would recommend buying from them as they have been very helpful and the unit I have from the W204 was flawless. The W204 unit and W207 units are exactly the same except for the plastic trim. If you will get one spend one with at least the 128gig memory and get the black screen. The blue screen does not look good in our vehicles.

I did buy the module for a different company. Had it all weird up and it worked fine. Then I had to put the car back together and, well, there just wasn't enough room to store the metal box anywhere, so I begrudgingly disconnected it again...

That was awful spelling in my prior post, apologies.

Let me know how you get on with that. I haven't pulled the trigger because I assumed it'd also need a new box inserted into the dash somewhere and I just can't work out where it would go!

I've had the Joyeauto wireless CarPlay/Android Auto in my 2015 E400 since 2018. Over the years, I've updated the firmware, though it's been a while, and never had any issues with iOS updates.

I had that version but sent it back, I could not find a good place for the box. Also, I hated not having a good-sized touch screen.

Clearly a long time ago, but do you know where you put the box? I think that's the one I have, too...

Never had the chance, as soon as I found how much of a PITA it was to hide it and no touch screen, packed it up to go back.

The android auto screen wont need any box. Everything is in the screen itself.

Personally, I prefer the OEM look. I can't stand the oversized appendages that the Android screens are. Regarding touchscreens, the downside is the fact that you'll have greasy fingerprints that you need to clean off. From my optic, if I want a larger touchscreen, I'd get a newer model Cab altogerther.

I love the larger screen and carplay is a must have in my book. regarding a new E-class, I can’t afford to drop that kind of money. also, having a larger screen is great, you don’t have to squint to see anything and it makes the car look newer.

Same. I hate the giant, floating iPad look.

To those wondering what is the difference on how it will look, here it what you can expect. This is a 12.3" screen. Those who drove the newer MB cars with the MBUX interface will greatly appreciate this. Having a android screen that you can attach a AHD front and rear camera or even a 360 camera will give any old car feels like new. Yes it might not be for everyone but like any other car interior it can grow on you. I myself mlwhen I had this on the W204 I was not feeling it but after a day or two I cannot drive without it. Google maps or waze on a 12.3" screen or split it into 2 for a Teams and maps or whatever is a dream that you will wish any modern MB can do. If you are those folks who want to do more inside their vehicles there is no question going with a android screen is a no brainer.

Looks great, do you have any pics of you running the two apps at once? I didn't know that was possible

I have not really installed it. I just plcaed it on the car for people to see how it will look. Basically it will cut the screen into 2 portion for a split screen. One thing I discovered when using this thing on the W204 is that you can have audio from the android routed directly to your speakers even if you are not on Aux mode. I did something on the settings to make it work. The folks on the internet even the seller told me it is not possible but it works in my W204. How do I know? The AM station is running on the command and I am getting google maps directions from the android at the same time.

Here is another view with the unit seating on the bezel. It is not centered just like the OEM screen. Not sure why the chinese guys did not pay attention to this but they can easily moved the mounting clips half an inch towards the right.

if you are seating down inside and you are used to the off center OEM screen and dash you wont notice it. I am thinking of having this bezel 3d scanned and I will modify the bezel to move it half an inch or what is needed to make it centered. Another project of mine I guess.

The position of the screen is great and you can easily reach it without a problem. It is like it was meant to be.

i’m done! What a PITA this was, total time was 10 hours. The big pain was the cable with the big connectors. i had to make a simple mod to the plastic bracket that the radio slides into. this mod allowed me to slide the connector behind the glove box (which i had to remove).

You should not have to do anything. If you just yank all thr wires downward behind the command (zip ties does wonders) the command unit should slide back in without any issue. You like it? Great right? How does it respond when you hit the reverse gear? Is the transition of the video as fast as the oem screen or there is a small delay?

The connectors were just not cutting it, there was just not enough room to move them in a way to allow the command unit back in. If you look at my dash, its a bit different than anyone I have seen. But the mod I did enabled me to move the connectors out of the way enough to fit the command unit back in. I tried for a few hours to do just what you're saying with no luck at all. I have had a few versions of these in the past in a BMW's so, I'm not totally green. Love it, and it responds very fast and it's all wireless. The transition from carplay to the OEM reverse camera is perfect, not much of a delay at all.
