Silent, but deadly

My 2006 C280's factory alarm makes no noise when I arm & disarm it - it's silent. It of course makes lots of noise when it goes off.

Anyway, does your's make noise? I asked the dealer if they could turn on the sound so I have an audible confirmation when I turn it on & off. The service guy told me I didn't have that "option", that when I bought the car I had to ask for that. He said, and I quote "You have the base level silent alarm".

Silly me, assuming that sound on my alarm system came standard!

I just go by my headlights flashing. Although a little beep would be nice...

beep in the alarm = Netherland setting. However you do lose the Panic buttom function.

yeah, my lights flash too.

I became aware of this when I drove in a car just like mine but it emits one chirp when the alarm sets and two when it deactivates.

like frank say ........"beep in the alarm = Netherland setting. However you do lose the Panic buttom function."

HOW CAN I MAKE MY C230/C320 ALARM "CHIRP" WHEN ARMED/DISARMED?

At the dealer, using the MB factory handheld laptop tester, go into the car's computer system.
Go into Programs
Locate the Rear SAM Program
Locate Body
Select Netherland
Now the car does a "chirp, chirp, chirp" when locking/arming and a single chirp when unlocking/disarming

^^^^^^^

The guy told me it would've cost me an hours labor extra when i bought the car. I guess it would be an hour's labor now. I could care less about the panic feature. Strange, all the other (Non MB) cars I've owned in the past did both.

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
My US wagon was silent when delivered. I liked the panic button. I use it to locate my car at the ball park, 'cause I forget where I left it.

Then the siren failed. When I got the car back after the dealer replaced the siren, it beeps three soft chirps on locking, and one soft chirp on opening. I get the feeling there was an update loaded when the computer was used to verify the siren was working. Of course the outside mirrors also fold in to tell my eyes what my ears already know. Makes it easy to look back, and confirm the car is locked.

Ask yourself first "what do I hope to gain from an alarm"?
1. Prevent the car from being stolen?
2. Prevent the car form being broken into and your stuff taken?

The answers:
1. A good alarm will have a feature to disable the car if the alarm goes off (fuel cutoff, ...) so it cannot be stolen. Our W203s already have this via the encrypted IR key.
2. A bad alarm will just make noise, no-one will care and your stuff will still be stolen. Other than adding the "pager" alarm types that will contact you when your car is messed with, simply adding an alarm to make noise is a waste of $$$ IMHO.

Spend the money on a clean install of any interior electronics and you won't need an alarm.

The costs will depend on the dealer. I just find it crazy that they want upwards of an hours worth of labor for something that would take less than 5 minutes!!!

2006 C280
My '06 C280 was manufactured in 04/06. It chirps 3 times when arming, once when disarming. It would be nice to have the mirrors fold in. Do you still have to change to Netherlands for that to happen?

Update: I just had my car in for service A and I asked to have the alarm set to the Netherland setting. The tech looked at me like I had lobsters crawling out of my ears when I asked this. He took me out back, pluged in the computer, and golly gee wizz, there it was. He changed it to Netherland and now my car chirps when armed & disarmed and my panic feature still wors.

"Double Stuff" SOLD | Nor*Cals "Pesky Audi"
coming from a honda where i had to use my key to get in... keyless entry isn't all that bad considering im still getting used to not turning around and sticking my key in the door and manually locking it.

maybe ill make note of that when service a comes around
