stock 16 inch wheel offset?

I'm looking at my wheel options but I cannot figure out what wheels will fit. I have an 01 sport sedan, and I can't find anywhere that someone has posted the offset for the factory wheels. I'm looking at a pair of 17x7.5 ET40 wheels at the moment.

Well, I can't read it because the wheels are on the car ;-)

I thought that 37mm was the offset for the 17x7.5's. So, does that mean that my 16x7's actually have more clearance than the stock 17s? And, would that imply that I NEED more clearance than the later cars?

And that is a problem? Be inventive. You're in college. Use a flexible mirror.

P.S.
Or you can use a strong flashlight and binoculars to read across while laying on the ground.

I ran 17 x 8 with 225 tires without an issue.

I'm in college, I cannot afford a flexible mirror!!! Okay, I go to a school where most kids drive nicer cars than I do so that's definitely a lie. I'm just too lazy to figure out where I'd get such a thing... alright, that's a lie to... I think I'm going to do exactly that. Oh! Or look at the spare!!! DUH?

But yeah I'm not worried about the width, just the offset. If my stock are 16x7.5 ET37 and I get some 17x7.5 ET40, some simple mathematics tells me that I will have 9mm less inner clearance. I don't know if that means it will be bumping into the brakes or not.

I think thats a sign of doing math by long hand instead of using a calculator/computer/etc like most lazy college kids do nowadays.

Actually, it's a typo. The stock wheels are 16x7, not 7.5.

Furthermore, I use my TI-89 for EVERYTHING. It can do pretty much anything.

Actually the reference was in regards to your clearence calculation of 9 mm versus 3 mm when comparing the offset numbers of 37 and 40 on a wheel width that is 12.7 mm different from the stock wheel. Following your original train of thought you should've come up with 9.35 mm. If your TI-89 says different I would check the batteries.

So, anyone have an answer to this? Will it clear with 9mm less space than my stock rims?

I already answered your question in post #5 of this, your, thread.

What is the matter with college kids nowadays? Does continual usage of a TI-89 inhibit their thought processes? Maybe its time to move to an HP.

Sorry, I'm not understanding how that answers my question. Or, perhaps my understanding of offsets is flawed. Actually, I think I just figured it out. I though the offset dictated how far from the brakes the face of the wheel was. But, offset has nothing to do with brake clearance (or that's what I'm thinking now). But, rather, it affects whether the wheel fits inside the space without bumping into things behind it or the fender. Is this correct? Anyhow, what was the offset on your x8's?
