Rubber Tread Life - C7 only

Some of us here are having about 10K miles out of the C7 Pilot tyres.

Scary !!! that is about 800 bucks a year just for the rubber?

What do you think is the useful life on yours?

Peace

I have the non C7 tires. Michlen MXV4, I have 16000 on them, and I may have another 2K, maybe. I didnt vote in the poll as not to skew the results. I do know that the Pilots are a softer compound and will probably wear quicker. but as always YMMV

I've got about 8000 on my pilots and plenty of tread left. I take them off during the winter months so I think I can go at least another season so that's $400/yr.

The other thing to consider the replacment tires don't have to be $200 pilots. I've heard people are getting good results from much cheaper Kumhos. So that's, what, $200-$250/yr?

I've yet (in 10 years of use) to see more than about 2 years out of a set of Z (or softer) tires.

You can do $800 for tires, or you can save a few bucks by going with the likes of Toyo Proxes. They stick better dry and wet and are about 1/2 of the price of the Michelins.

I have 7500 miles on mine and plenty of tread left. I will NOT replace them with the same tires, though.

Try Yokohama

I have about 3500 miles on my pilots and the rears don't look like they will last past 10,000 miles. I won't buy the pilots next time because of the price. I know the Kumho's are cheap and I've heard they're pretty good. But that new Yokohama AVS ES100 is almost as cheap as the Kumho's and looks nice. It actually looks a lot like the pilots in the sidewall and tread design. So I will probably try those.

Z-rated tires do wear out very quickly in comparison to V- or H- rated ones, that's the price you pay for better road grip, as the compound used in their tread is much softer. In addition, I hear that Z-rated tires' quality control is better. Not sure if this is true, but it would make perfect sense as such tires are used at higher speeds, which obviously requires fewer manufacturing defects and better balancing.

yeah I am considering getting V rated tires next round. I had the V's on my integra and they lasted forever and didnt really compromise noticably as far as handling... and with the money saved on tires yearly I can afford suspension upgrades...!

This was one of the reasons I DIDN"T get the C7 package. I drive a lot commuting, and I wanted all-season tires. I must say, though, that there are times when I feel like I would like a little more dry weather grip than I get with my stockers.

Does anyone remember/know what tires are on the non-C7? Mine is in the shop...

my conti's have a little over 18K mi on them. I just rotated them, the front tires where pretty worn down from cornering really hard (sorry can't help it, it's fun... ), but the wear was only on the outside corners of the tires. The rears were in pretty good shape though. They were a little worn in the center but lots of tread left. I'd say a least 50%.

Matt230K,

i looked at those Yokohama's (AVS ES100 ). Those look pretty good. How much more are they than kumhos? Stiffer side walls would be a great help. i can feel the tread squirm a little bit on my current conti's, but the grip has been pretty good.

So true. While the Z-rated tires are obviously higher performance I do think they are overkill on this car. This is not a C32 after all and we are not driving on the autobahn.

Beg to disagree... You can never have too much traction... Unless you drive a Ford Taurus Seriously, I drive my coupe quite hard, especially now, with the ASP pulley. Sticky tires affect everything in a positive way - acceleration, handling, braking. Downside - quick wear and harsher ride, but if I needed a supple ride, I wouldn't have gotten the C7 package, in the first place.

DONT get the NItto NT 450's.

HAve them on the clk 320 with the amg wheels. I have had them rebalenced 2x and there is a vibration that rattles the wheel at 35-40 then it dissapears.

They plain in english SUCK in the wet. My car is a 99, so it doesnt have esp. But launching smoothly causes asr to come on in the rain. Doing an emergency manuever? Forget it, it feels like im on ice when im in rain. I dont see how its that bad but it is.

Funny they say its a great wet tire.

The dry performance is OK, but my stock conti touring ecoplus' on the 16 inch didnt sqeaul like these. The threshold is bad and the breakaway is sudden. I trust them mostly on dry but they suck in the wet badly. Like unsafe.

I have 5k miles on them, tons of tread left in the rear, fronts always wear the corners out, but the rest of the tire is perfect.

You can decide, but next time i will go with KUMHO at least.

I got the tires for 80 bucks each from www.bestdealsonwhls.com. got my rims there too, but u get what u pay for....

I'm shooting for 24k miles from my C7 Michelins. Currently I have 16k miles. I had them rotated at 12k. The rears wear fast due to RWD, but fronts looked great. I have never really spun the tires, so the wear is all from HWY driving.

I have stock 16" C240 wheels for winter use on my coupe. Next spring I will be shopping for new summer rubber. I will probably be buying the Kumhos.

Note - The tires have been "talking" since the pulley upgrade.

A bad tire that lasts forever

Nothing worse that a tire that you got inexpensively but don't enjoy, .....and it won't wear out. Those two years will seem like forever.

You are better off choosing something you're sure you will like and then having to replace it a little early. So make your choices on the more-performance side, don't give up too much on performance.

I've had mine out for a couple of track days on the stock Michelin MVX Energy's- total of 7.5K, and I'm already pricing out new tires.

Probably going to go with the Dunlop SP5000 Asym. A/S at $98 per (Tirerack). They might hold up a bit better in the S at the track, too.

If you have C7, the Yokohama AVS ES100 is like 115 dollars from Tire Rack, compared to Kumho's at like 100. Looks like a great tire for the money. I'll probably get them next summer.
