Dashboard Removal / Stepper Motor Linkage Replacement

Is there a DYI for this somewhere? I've been searching without any luck.

I have the common knocking sound from the AC stepper motors. This one is in the CD changer area, it's maybe the one by the right vent in the center nozzle.

How many stepper motors are in there? Mine is a 2002.

I tried the resynchronation process but it stays ON...

What are your suggestions? Parts were only $6.37 for the linkage and I'll hate to pay $600 for labor...

Thanks for your input - Carlos

Is it possible to reach the stepper motors from the nozzle vents? I found a thread to remove the nozzles only... I just don't know where exactly the motors are. I don't even know that they look like... I have 2 plastic pieces that supposely are doing the knocking sound.

Any luck with this ///AMG4EVER? Mine just starting making the noise yesterday I'm assuming it's the footwell flapper since that seems to be the high failure part. I could live without heat going to the footwell but the noise irritates me. From the diagrams linked by BKLYN C it looks like part #310 is the motor in question as it is attached to the left 'legroom' vent. From this link http://www.kotikone.fi/eerola/auto/d...ash/index.html it doesn't look accessible through the center vent.

Ditto for a much needed DIY. This started happening to me this week in the footwell. I wonder if the cars were programmed to screw up this month.

i get a ticking sound when its very cold outside the noise come from within the Dash i hear this sound with out even starting the car or even turn on the A/C the noise last about 5-10 mins it sounds like a fan is spinning and something is stuck in it.

does anyone know which fans spin within the dash without starting the car? as soon as i hit the unlock on the remote button the noise start this only happen if the car is Very Cold and haven't been driven in a few hours.

That could be the purge valve which is common on C's and causes a ticking noise. The culprit is under the hood behind the drivers headlight and can be very noisy.

OK, I take my previous post back. Do you have COMAND?? The fan on the COMAND will start when you hit the unlock on your key.

I could hear my COMAND fan outside the car with the door open. I remember saying WTF is that? I am not sure about an overhead fan, didn't know one was up there I guess.

Found this on another forum..."To do the footwell stepper motor .. it is rather involved .. you have to take out the whole center console armrest up to a/c vents ... under panel which holds the iginition and panel between glove box and center dash and then u will see 2 motors the one you will have to replace is the one behind the giant metal support bar..." part numbers:
203 8201642 Servo motor
203 8300033 Control lever
203 8300032 Set of levers

No... I still have the parts in my trunk. There are 2 plastic links that I guess coupled to the motor. Stealerships change the whole assembly but an honest technician told me the plastic linkage is what breaks... I'm still debating about doing this myself...
