Question THUMP/BUMP when stopping ?

I have a 2002 C230 and when I slow to stop, just before the car is dead stopped, I feel a bump or thump like some just rear-ended
me really softly ??

It's really noticeable and happens at almost every stop ???

Any ideas ?

Thanks,
John

nothing,

it's seems lounder the "faster" you come to a stop, it almost sounds like "play" in the tranny ? but it doesn't do it on take off.

Did you check your heat shields? I think someone on the c32/55 forums was saying they had a thump when their car came to a stop. The owner went through some checks here and there only to discover it was just a heat shield that was lose. It appeared to be on tight when the owner looked at it from under the car, so maybe try literally shaking stuff.

I dunno what you mean w/ "play in the tranny" ....

2 possibilities in my opinion:

1 ) Warped rotors...when you have warped rotors (Forgive me if you already know this...just want to make it clear if you don't) the surface of your brakes' rotors are uneven...so when you brake (applying pressure on the brake pads onto the rotors) the brake pads will "read" the surface of the rotors...which will be an uneven surface with possibly a lot of bumps...so pretty much the brake pads are going up and down some bumps on your uneven/warped rotors.

2) I forget where I read this...somewhere on this forum, but I heard it's something to do with the fuel lines (or something to do with the fuel). It wasn't brought up too long ago...I'm sure you can find it...but I think their interpretation was that when the guy braked, the fuel would slush at a certain location in the car and that would cause the sound/bump you feel...But again, I'm not exactly sure...but it should be somewhere on the forum.

Good luck with whatever it is...Recently it happened to me....but that's the only time I recall that ever happening...and this was about a week ago.

I have had the same problem from day 1 on my W203. Just assumed that was normal for our cars as I got the car brand new!!

not really feels just like someone lightly taps the rearend just as it comes to a stop, it does seem to roll forward more freely for just a second after it happens.

if its feels like someone is rear ending you while your stopping, its more than likely the snapring that holds some of the clutches in your transmission has come loose. you will feel it more as u slow down and the trans downshifts from 2-1. there is a bulletin out on this. i have repaired 2 of these problems already. if ur car is still under waranty take it to the dealer.

A bottle of beer rolling forward in the boot ( trunk) ?.

Sounds as if it is a loose item somewhere.

The thump is probably lash in the rear axle being taken up as the transmission does the 2-1 changedown. When last was the transmission serviced? Aside from clutchpack snap rings there was also a software fix that delayed this changedown. The trouble is that most 2002 cars have the non flashable TCU. Only a VIN check will tell which your car has. Also check the rear transmission mouting. Common failure.

Fluid & filter change might improve it. You can catch all of these cars doing it now & again through clumsy driving. Yours is obviously worse. You can also catch out the Torque converter lockup clutch by clumsy driving.
