Rear view turn signal and phantom wipe !!!

Good one to all, I am new to the MB world. I bought a 2006 C-230 three weeks ago and i have a problem that the dealership has no idea what it could be. If anyone could help, it would be greatly appretiated.
Every now and then i'll get a message of faulty left turn signal as soon as i select it, when it is left on for more that 3 seconds it will go away. I steped out of the car once as the message came on and the rear viewturn signal was out. With my wipper select switch in the Auto feature the wippers will once in a blue moon wipe with out any rain falling on them. I took the car to the dealership and they had it there for 4 days. They replaced the multifunction switch that controls the cruice control, wippers and signal lights. I picked up the car last night, today its doing it again.
What can this be? I'm pretty good with cars and i think it might be a shorted out light bulb in that rear view mirror but, they dont think so.
Thanks in advance.

Eddie

my guess for the 'phantom wiper' would be some sort of moisture or condensation build up in/on the sensor. depending on where you live/what the weather is [cold/humid/etc] like that my be the case and it'd most likely need to be replaced. again, just a guess.

check the DIY sticky. find the mirror cover replacement, you may have a lose wire.

good luck and welcome to the boards

You're not supposed to leave your rain sensing wipers on when it isn't raining. The manual warns about that.

Eddie,
1) the phantom wipe is an easy one... you leave it on AUTO feature and it's going to do that occassionally. Just like noted above, if it's not raining, turn it off.

2) update your profile on the left, with your year & model, and location where you live. This helps people better answer your questions, because not all the features & problems on C models are the same throughout the years. As for location, this helps forum members troubleshoot why certain things may be occurring, and can direct you to local help or dealers.

3) as for the LEFT turn signal fault, it's either a disconnected wire or a burnt out light. I don't understand why the dealer replaced the entire multifunction switch that controls the cruise control, wipers and signal lights. Didn't they just check the connection to the LEFT turn signal ???
What makes them think that it is NOT a shorted out light bulb ???
Didn't they see what you saw ( that the signal was out) ???

Sounds to me that either the dealer is clueless, or you didn't explain correctly what was wrong... Maybe they assumed the two (signal error and phantom wipes) were somehow related. But even so, you would think that they would try to re-create the fault, and then troubleshoot, rather than just "let's replace the entire switch" option.

Eddie, for the blinker error message, did you have them check the bulb holder. It's one piece, so it wouldn't hurt for them to check that.

1. Ok will turn off the wippers.
2. Profile updated. Thanks
3. I explained the problem just like i did here, the tech told me he could not duplicate what i was seeing so, he went ahead and replaced the whole thing. He told me he though that they were related for some reson. I have to take it back today and i guess they will replace the light bulb or check for the cables this time.

Thanks for all of your help.

CRAP! I've been driving with the sensors on AUTO for like 2 months now, will it do any damage?

You might want to check your rear bulbs. I am a duff when it comes to auto stuff, but even I did this once my service advisor showed me, which he did with great cheer. Once they show you how to do it, you can do it yourself. If you are at all handy you can do it yourself. Good Luck.

PS.....the bulbs at the rear cost about $2 each and the whole rear light assembly is a single piece and costs about $20.
