Alright somebody clarify this....M111
my deal is i have a 02 sport coupe, and i looked at the underchassis very wel today when i had it up on the lift and something isnt making sense.
as it was explained to me: there were two catalytic converters. one right off the header, one midway down, then a resonator, muffler and tip.
from what i saw, there is only one catalytic converter, none right off the header, just midway down the exhaust, then the resonator, muffler, and tip.
so either i'm calling a cat a resonator or missing something completely, anybody got any ideas why i'm only seeing one cat?

Were you looking at the bottom by lying down or was your car on the lift?
The one off the header is tucked underneath and would be difficult to see without getting right underneath the car. It should be on a steep angle like a part of the down pipe. The secondary should be right underneath the car in plain view.

you are right, there are 2 sets of cats, a resonator and then a rear silencer.
it goes. ENGINE--->headers--->CAT 1 (should be just one)--->CAT 2 (for my 3.2 there is 2 cats here)--->RESONATOR---->REAR SILENCER

well, i had it up on a lift, and had a clear view. i could see the block, head, headers, mid pipe, cat, resonator, and muffler. there simply was not a catalytic converter anywhere near the head.
are ya'll sure theres a secondary cat on the 02 sport coupe? maybe you're thinking of the M271 or another year? i wonder what a MB parts site has to offer....

well, i appreciate the input, and i can tell all my stuff is factory, and there simply is not a catalytic converter on or near the head. the only cat is midway down the car, about 18" before the resonator.

just take a picture of the whole set up when your car is up on the lift,
and someone will be more than happy to photoshop arrows in the pic and show you all the parts. (or missing parts ).

i dont need photoshopped arrows, i'm known to be rather oblivious at times but one cannot miss a damn catalytic converter near the header. i traced the entire system visually..... and i probably know more about cars than 90% of the users on here. i'm just plain stumped, the analysis doesnt match the standards!
EDIT: re-read my post and it comes off like i'm being a serious jerk, please dont take it that way!

woah buddy. 90% of the users here probably know more about cars than you do. alot of our members are in the automotive business.
since your the expert, you can probably answer your own question.
1. either you have had a cat delete (assuming ur car is used). then you can see if there is any cut marks.
2. your counting wrong. the entire after header exhaust system on the coupe is the same from C180-C350
*EDIT* that is excluding the CDI models.

Now, I'm hella curious as to what your undercarriage exhaust set up looks like, if it wasn't cut or welded or anything.
I don't subscribe entirely to Advan's statement that all Coupé exhausts are equal. 1.8L / 2.3L / 3.2L tubing diameter is different; some have resonators, some dont; muffler sizes are different too.
Anyway, next time each of you are under the car (myself included), snap some shots of the entire exhaust set up, and let's compare. Post pics here, so that this thread becomes a helpful tool !

Im sure his car has to have atleast 2 sets of cats. the first set of cats are quite hidden.
if his car was without cats, then that would be quite interesting. maybe M111s dont have first cats.
but again, question is. does his existing cat have the sensors located there?

yes there is two 02 sensors that i took note of..... one where the pipe makes a turn and becomes parallel with the ground, and a second just past the cat converter.
also: to remove the intake resonator on M111 engine, remove stock airbox. the bolt on the right and hoseclamp on the left. remove the intake assy on the passengers side of the car (left hand drive car that is), which is a torx bolt or two. then disconnect the six bolts holding the bottom peice (big peice of aluminum) in place. now take that off of the car and remove the plastic peice. find an aircraft locknut to seal the hole that would be left. tighten. re assemble. its really rather easy, but requires a toolbox that has both internal and external torx.
well, i'm off to go fly a mission. ciao!

well, you remove the air filter. simple enough. one bolt and one hose clamp.
then there is the upper manifold peice (big blocky thing on the right hand side of the engine.) that will require you to remove the electrical connector, a few vacumm hoses, and a hose clamp. that slides off rather easily too.
under neath of that, is a large peice of piping. its all aluminum and shaped rather funny. there are six torx bolts holding it in place. unbolt that peice, remove from car. flip it over and you'll see the resonator bolted to the bottom of it. undo the three bolts that hold it in place. one of the bolts goes through the housing, and you'll need to have a metric aircraft quality locknut to hold the bolt in place, otherwise you'll leak air. tighten bolt.
reinstall. the reason you dont understand what i'm talking about is because you arent doing it while following the directions....trust me, as long as you have some torx sockets (female sockets) and a hex key set, you'll be golden. it literally takes like less than five tools to do it. sounds great too. good luck!
this is exactly how my exhaust is constructed under the car. it certainly doesnt split off into two secondary cats either.

The v6 models have a different setup from the headers to the secondary cats.
Only thing that is consistant for all the models is the size of the piping (estimated 2.5-2.75) - My guess would be 2.5, cuz it doesn't look close to 3 inches.

ah, i see. thanks for the clarification, i was quite stumped when i found out that i only had one cat!
EDIT: do i have any other options besides spending a small fortune of headers? it seems i missed those $500 headers made by a guy on this board by about a month. i so would have picked up a set. $2000 for kleeman headers? i could probably get a set of headers custom bent and tig'd for that price! sheesh.

It took 20 posts to get the correct answer? And I was forced to read to the end so I wouldn't double post? All you 111 experts eh?
The C320 has 2 cats?
Thats good to know.
No one had headers for this car for 500. That was that douchbag on some W202 forum who claimed he designed them hisself in Texass.
Turned out they were from Deutchland.
You can still buy them from that company, the link is posted around here somewhere when I pwned him. Less than 500, if you want to try and work with them.
They had short pipes. The Supersprint is the sheeite.
Long pipes, excellent power across the range.
If you can find one it's well worth it.
That, muffler and ASP make an excellent combo I can tell you from experience.
Pul-lease...
windshield wiper fluid, and whistle tip in the sig, gotta go!
Resonator delete too, since a lot of cars came without them...
not really a mod, removing something.

well, the 320 has 2 sets of cats. right after the header, then right before the resonator again. first set is 1 cat, second set is 2 cats.
anyways, kompressor85, I rememebr someone on "the other forum" was giving away a track pipe for the M111.
