Using Pledge to prevent brake dust is a waste of time ...

Folks,

I just wanted to voice my personal opinion and experience that using Pledge to prevent brake dust as hyped about in previous
discussions is a waste of time according to me.
I did try it out for 2-3 weeks but did not find it to be very effective.
So I had to go back to my normal routine of spraying my rims with
some GriotsGarage wheel cleaner. Hosing them down and then
wiping the left over dust with cotton towels. God I hate this routine so I am going to go with Buells advice and replace my brake pads with Porterfields once I wear my current pads off to keep brake dust in check.
If someone else has another miracle cure for brake dust other than Pledge I would love to hear about it.

Brakes

I want to get the Porterfields too.

At my B service I complained of squeeking brakes and of course the diagnosis was that I had glazed them over. Have been braking lightly and seems to be burning that layer off as the squeek is almost gone.

The stock brakes are great but I don't need the pads to be that soft with all this dust.

What parts do we need for the C230?

On the Porterfield site this is all I could find?

pledge does not work.
however most wheels are clear coated just like the finish on your paint .
therefore you can apply a coat of wax to them and it is much eaiser to clean brake dust from them.
this does work !!

I have a couple of coats of Zaino on my wheels. It may not prevent brake dust, but it sure does make cleaning them off much easier.

todd, I remember reading some comments about the Porterfield brakes being prone to squeeking. You may want to check this out before you purchase them. If I have this wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me.

Thanks Rev. I have a couple weeks before I purchase the Pilot Sports as they are having a sale starting 10/21. That would be when I change the pads.

You should be so lucky, just call Porterfield Brakes in Costa Mesa, CA. I believe the fronts are $179. No need to do the rear as they don't dust much anyway. Check with Geoff at www.Speedtoys.com, they did a group buy for this forum about a year ago. They get drop shipped from Porterfield anyway so it doesn't take anymore time.

Not to alarm you but it's the same pad, C320, C240, C230. I gave my C230 factory pads to a friend with a C320 and the dealer put them in, no problems.

Get anthracite or gunmetal color rims. They are pretty much same color as brake dust so u dont really have to worry about cleaning them as much

Porterfield

Ok, I am ordering the Porterfield R4-S front pads.

Ya Buell, $179. That's pretty good I think.

Anyway, my dealer (Glendale)says they won't install them.

Is this pretty much the norm, so I have to go to a third party shop?

Thanks,

Todd

Oh ya and thanks Rev, I found the follwing on their site so think the complaints of squeaking may have been with the R4 pad.

I am getting the R4-S.

What is the difference between the R-4 and the R-4S? The difference between the R-4 and R-4S pad is the R-4 has a higher friction level and will withstand higher temperatures than the R-4S. Also the R-4 was designed for racing use, if driven on the street you may experience some dust and or squeal. The R-4S is designed for street and limited track use. It is a serious high performance highway pad with high friction levels and is designed for driver's school, and light track events. R-4S was designed to produce no squeal and less dust than OE pads.

For the W203 they only had the R4-S pad anyway. The cheapest place was the one that did a group buy for the forum at $100 (too late for that deal) but he'll still give you a fair price. Check with Geoff at http://www.speedtoys.com/ I know it's a ricer site but who cares, they drop ship from Porterfield anyway. Ask Geoff for the best price on the Porterfield front pads for the MB W203. Last I heard he was offering them for $135. Fill the forum in on what you find out.

If you want to save $10 then go to www.myroadster.net, I've heard Jerry charges $169 but I don't know if I would bother at that price and just get them straight from Porterfield. Mention the forum, maybe he'll cut you a deal.

Of course there's always Pagid for $49.

Pledge, just say no!

Thanks a lot Geoff.

By the way I had already made the order with Porterfield, but called back and explained the situation and the lady so was so cool about, she even said she knew of you and that you were a great guy :-) (Shameless Plug)

I'll call you with my credit card info.

Not a problem.

Texas residents do get to pay taxes however..and shipping beyond SoCal of course..would cost more...but not much.
