What Extended Warranty to Get?

Hi, as my user name suggests, I just traded my '05 Nissan 350z for an '02 MB c320 - for a variety of interesting reason. But the car is in great condition (from a reputable dealer), with low miles, and I beat down the dealer for a great price. However, my one concern is: which extended warranty to get? I hope to get some feedback in terms of the types of repairs people have had to do to these cars?

I already declined the dealer's ripoff of $3900 for a 3 year. Warranty Direct is a reputable sources, and there are two options that I'm considering.

A "bumber to bumber" that covers 12 of the 16 major components for $2900 for 3 years, or a powertrain for about $1700 for 5 years/100,000 miles. Essentially, the decision comes down to whether I should expect $1500 or more in repairs within the first 3 years, for parts that a drivetrain warranty does not cover (i.e. power windows, power seats, and all the other gadgets).

What have people spend in that regard for these cars? Thanks!

Mercury Select Seems Good

Mercury Select seems to be less expensive than Warranty Direct and is also backed by an insurance company. The payment system seems to be the same as well -- direct CC billing.

I need to do more independent research though. One thing to watch out for is: who pays for the adjuster if there is a dispute between the repair shop and warranty company. It should be the warranty company.

Does anyone have a recommendation in terms of bumper to bumper versus powertrain protection on these cars?

B 2 B, as you will really miss it if something drastic happens to say the Head Unit, Seat motors, window motors, instrument panel unit, restrainte system or any of the computers.

How many miles are currently on the vehicle?
3900 is a lot of scratch as is 2900 if it's only good till 100K.
If the drivetrain warranty covers electronics related the engine,
that might be worth it. Other stuff you can fix yourself,
and order parts from Duval motorcars in florida.
They have the best prices for genuine MB parts.

Go to the dealer and get a printout of all the work thats been done on your car...ha, you may be surprised. With any luck the prior owner worked out the bugs.

man oh man, what a problem this is going to be. i have been shoppin and shoppin, it just seems like no one has a straight answer as to WHAT company to go with.

BAISICALY, from what research i have done(extensive lol), if you want a warrenty, your gonna want a Exclusionary warranty and not a WHATS COVERED warranty. the reason for this, is that in an Exclusionary warranty, everything on that car is covered EXCEPT the certain things they list on the Excluded list. that may be the best case unless that item on taht list is missing something that really goes wrong alot on the vehical u want to warranty.

what ever you do, i would recomend that type of a warranty. just with who is teh question. with thatw arranty you will find it better, other types of warrantys(listed coverage) dont cover things like door handels and buttons and such lol

I Deal With Ext Warrantys Everyday, Biggest Pain In The *** Ever! Ultimate Warranty, Ford Easycare, The One Care, Mercury Select, Toyota Continuous Care, You Name It Ive Dealt Wiht Them. From My Run-ins Toyota Continuous Care Seems To Be Damn Good Theyre Not Going To Cover Things That Toyotas Dont Have Just Like Any Other Ext Warranty But W/e You Choose Make Sure Its Got A Reputable Name Backing It Ex: Toyota, Lexus Not Just Some Fly By Night Florida Based Warranty

I have an 03 c230 SS, it just went over 50K and I found a warranty for $1962 (4 year/addl 60K whichever comes first)... costing me interest free $109 a month for 18months. Its pretty much bumper to bumper. I will be getting my contract in the mail soon and will give more details on it.

What goes wrong on these?

At the end of the day, it comes down to how much to shell out up front versus the cost of repairs times the likelihood of those repairs... can anyone share their experiences with these cars in terms of what repairs they have had to do and what the cost was?

As someone mentioned, you can fix the non-critical stuff yourself and it's not going to get you stranded if you wait. The main thing is that the critical components that are likely to go are covered.

To give you an idea. I went with the dealer option and paid the $3K. I picked my car up in December 07. In March I had the transmission, radiator, and all of the associated hoses replaced (coolant was leaking into the transmission).

In May the ignitor switch to the xenon lights went out and they had to replace the entire assembly per the terms of the warranty, during this time I also mentioned the fact that the display above the steering wheel had pixels that were going in and out causing the display to be unreadable at times.

All of this was covered under the extended warranty and I would be hard pressed to believe that all of the work would have cost less than the 3k I paid. In my mind it was $3k well spent and it has already paid for itself.

Hope this info helps.

Another thing to consider is where live, I live a hour away from the closest benz dealer, and have a great euro shop 10 miles from me, not sure how long i will keep it....but even though the dealer comes down to pick it up, gives me a loaner, then returns it even for oil changes.... I am not sure at what point to extend it

I used Mercury Select and they've already replaced the driver's side seat cushion (seat heater broke), front sway bar, headrest motor and intercooler pump all without any problem. So far they've been great to work with and they pay the repair facility immediately with a credit card #.
