Cheap Oil and Break-in (Good and Bad News)

Lets start with the good news.

If you're willing to put in work you can get a sick deal on Mobil 1 0w40 oil. I followed the instructions and ended up walking out with 4 6-pack cases for under $100. I went to to the Advanced Auto Parts store on the Morton Street in Boston yesterday.

It involves price matching a pepboys online coupon with advanced auto parts. The thread I found this on is below: Mobil 1 0W40

On to the bad news.....

My car was broken into last night. What really pisses me off is that I was awake when it happened. I had just picked Tiger Woods Golf '08 for my XBOX 360 and like the idiot I am I was still up at 3:00AM playing it.

I heard an alarm go off but having never heard my MB alarm I checked in the back for my neighbor's cars first (they have been broken into before...same M.O.). I saw nothing in the back and as I was heading to the front to check the alarm stopped. I figured it was the alarm of one of my other neighbors going off because they hit the wrong button or something.

I sat back down and proceeded to play another 30 minutes or so of Tiger Woods.

Fast forward to this morning. My wife is heading to the supermarket, she walks outside and starts banging on the door. I get up from the couch and open the door. She looks at me and says come outside. I peek out the door and see what looks to be my drivers side window rolled down.

I come back in, toss on some shorts and flip flops and it dawns on me that I've been pumping A/C all weekend and haven't rolled my window down at all. As I go outside and approach my car I see that he window has been shattered. What had adhered to the tinting is still in the shape of my window sitting on my drivers side seat. My digital camera was sitting on top of my shattered window and my glove box was opened with everything tossed on the passenger seat.

I say "F$ck!" and go back in pick up the phone and call the police (that was at 3pm and its now 6pm and still no police....gotta love the boston police department). I call insurance, place my claim and have spent the last 3 hours cleaning the car and putting plastic over the window.

The only thing they took was the change in the ashtray and my registration. I've placed a consumer fraud alert with all three credit bureaus and had my mother-in-law put reminders on her office computer to periodically check my registration and what have you with the RMV (she work for an insurance company) just in case they try to change ownership of the vehicle, etc.

They did not take my digital camera (apprx value = $300), and oscar de la renta blazer (apprx value = $600), or a pair of cole haan shoes that are still in the box (apprx value = $250)....only $3 in change and my registration.

Aside from the broken window I now have pieces of glass in the bottom of my door (you can hear them when you open/close the door), scratches to the leather below the window, a series of knicks to the door handle on the drivers side door, a nasty scratch to the burlwood trim on the door, cracked trim around the shifter, and thousands fine pieces of glass and glass dust all over the car.

I am beyond pissed b/c this is not the way I wanted to spend my labor day and after everything I've done to the car in the last 3-4 months (which are all the mods I've done) it was looking like the lady I've always wanted. Now my lady has a black eye!

I've gone out and purchased a set of monitors. One is going into my car @ night the other in my bedroom. If these punks come back they will see what 12 years of competitive shooting can do for a man holding a .45 taking aim at what I will assume to be a moving target once i open my front door.

A couple of questions:
1.) How could my alarm be disabled after going off?/why would it have stopped after 3 minutes or so?
2.) Ideas where I can get matching trim and black leather handle for my door?

So pissed off right now...but needed to vent/share/get advice from people who know what it means to pour a part of yourself into a car.

It occurs to me that perhaps the reason for taking the reg is to get the VIN and get a key made.
Is there a way to contact Mercedes to not make any new keys for anyone?

I'll give Mercedes a call this morning and alert them. Thanks for the heads up.

oh dude..that sucks.....

what I can say is, when the alarm DOES go off, of if you THINK its your alarm going off. open the door, put the key in, turn on battery, shut it off, and lock your car again.

once when my alarm went off 2 something in the morning, and I thought someone was trying to break into my car, but it was just the stupid alarm malfunctioning,

but dam man, im glad they didn't take your oscar de la renta blazer, if it was me, I would have been SOOOOO PISSSSSED THE HELL OFF!!!!!!!!!!

but stupid boston cops, what the hell are they doing? eatin donuts?

Ouch, I've been thinking a lot about break-ins lately. Once my cars all modded up it's going to attract a lot more attention than being stock and considering I live in Lynn... I'm pretty much boned. Even when I'm at work it's a huge parking lot and no one would even notice if someone was breaking into my car. Sorry to hear it happened though. Whereabouts in Boston do you live?

I live in Mattapan, but far from the shady side. If I walk across the street I'm in Milton so my neighborhood is one of the safest in the city.

Yeah I hear you on Lynn, one of my friends has a heavily modded Nissan 350Z (the car is sick) and he had his broken into at the commuter rail station after parking for 5 minutes. He got out, walked around the corner picked up some food or something and by the time he got back his window was broken, phone and ipod gone.

sucks

What color is it? I've seen a few modded Zs around here and pretty much remember all of them.

Haha, and the second I read the word "Mattapan" (my mind processed it as Murderpan) I was like OH BIG SURPRISE. So even if you are in a nice part of the city, you're close enough to the bad part. Same situation here, my neighborhood is pretty nice, but drive a few blocks down the street and... well I wouldn't drive a few blocks down the street =).
