Faulty Lateral Acceleration Sensor
Hey everyone, I need some opinions on my situation. My 02 C240 has been displaying an ESP error so I decided to bring it to the dealer and have them check it out. After looking at my codes, they came back and told me that my lateral acceleration sensor is gone and I'd need it replaced, but it would be like a $750 with parts and labor. I'm reading the sheet and the code they put down is C1142. They wrote under the parts ordered what I found to be a Yaw Sensor (PN 003-542-23-18). From what I understand the lateral acceleration sensor is a cheap part but the yaw is pretty expensive. Is this just a case of the dealer trying to screw me, or since these parts are related could the code just be non-specific?
Thanks for any reply as I'm expecting this to just drop to the bottom.

No reply because no one knows...I looked up the cost of the part...
405.60 + + +
Yowzers!
So, yeh, if it's "only" 300 in labor you could probably do it yourself, since
that likely means it's a 30 minute job for the mechanic,
+ time spent going to the parts dept., chowing down on donuts, and doing the paperwork. ESP sucks anyway...screw it.

And as much as ESP sucks... I recently found out while skimming through my manual that if the car has an ESP problem it limits the power of the car... think about it... 168HP LIMITED MORE. No wonder when I drove my Mom's 03 C240 it seemed much faster.
BTW, where did you find the part for $405? Thanks again man.

Also consider a salvage yard. My kid's SLK needed a blinker module, $825 at the dealer, maybe $600 at Duval, $125 at a salvage yard, guarantted for 90 days, been working every since, over a year now. If you find one salvage yard, you've found them all, they are interconnected. Also there's websites that help you track which salvage yard has it, I think it's call getparts.us or something like that.

Thanks. I checked out that site and under Mercedes C-class, the ABS page doesn't work... figures. I'll keep checking back though. Thanks again.

It makes no such mention of limiting the power of my car if ESP has a fault. Are you sure you read it right? Could someone post the actual text?
As far as ESP sucking.. It's saved me a few times and it absolutely does what it is intended to do. I think it is a great safety net.

Register and use the electronic parts catalog. Look up that part (for your car model) and it should show you more or less where it is in the illustration. Then go see if you can find it. It might be just unplugging and re-plugging the replacement.

I replaced this sensor myself. It's in trunk, easily accessible, and would take less than fifteen minutes to do if you have any mechanical aptitude at all. Buy the sensor and look for the comparable part under the trunk carpet. Unscrew it, swap the wires and screw the new one down.
