What are "Brake Strut Bushings"
Went to the MB Autohaus in Glencoe, Illinois today for the first time. Needed an oil change and Service A. This is my first visit, as I purchased this C320 used a few months back. I was told I need new "Brake Strut Bushings" at $500 and the car has a differential side seal leak, $900 to repair. Can someone tell me what the brake strut bushings are? I will get the car on a lift to see how bad the axle seal is, but I am not sure about the bushings. Advice is welcome.
Also, is there a diagnostic tester someone could recommend for that intermittant check engine light?

Year, Make, Model, Location, things like that will help people help you! It sounds like some lame crap but I would need to know lots more info to look the part up for the (again!) year, make, model of car that you put in your profile(that you don't have!) for someone to begain to help you. Sometimes if I find someone who lives near me I can help them in person maybe. But again you failed to inform us of that little information. So I would go back to the dealer and spend the money and get it fixed there.

Sorry about that missing info.
2002 C320 Sedan. 55006 miles. Drives great. Automatic
Live in Glencoe Illinois, just north of Chicago.
I do know what struts are....but not brake strut bushings. Have access to a lift and a full shop.
I am more familiar with my 1966 Mustang than the C320.
I hope this helps

Welcome to the forum. Any guy with a Cobra can’t be all bad.
That you have access to a lift and shop leads me to believe you’re inclined to DIY. Replacing the bushings is not a difficult task, as several of us have successfully done the deed. Let us know if you need more information.
Trust these will prove at least somewhat useful. #18 is the torsion strut, #29 is the cross strut.

So I got the C320 up on the lift a few minutes ago to inspect the "brake strut bushings" that the dealer insisited needed to be replaced.
Well all the bushings looked brand new to me except one......Never found the "brake strut bushing" the dealer referred to, but indeed found the torsion bar bushings. The ugly one.....This would be the passenger side torsion strut bushing, looked intact, however it looks like part of it has been sprayed with some corrosive in one small corner. Can someone confirm if these are filled with some liquid, perhaps this is what the dried liquid is and what the dealer saw?
On top of that, the check engine light is now on and I got an engine warning message that told me the engine had too much oil. Also, the siphon fill cap is now gone....evidently the mechanic forgot to reinstall it. So I siphoned off 1/2 quart and duct taped the siphon tube closed. Oh well! So much for master mechanics!

Yes they are filled with fluid. Most all Mercedes mounts are fluid filled to dampen road noise and vibration. You could change the whole arm and bushing or remove it and press out the old and install new. Around $18.00 at oempartsdirect.com for bushing, $170.00 for whole arm and bushing.
