How much of this was down hill? I used to get over 70 mpg with my Saab Turbo down hill.

I have seen 50 mpg down hill with my Coupe.

yeah if it is downhill you can get up tp 99.99 i believe lol. When i was coming back from MT. High i just let it cruise down the hill and it said 99.99 i believe.

no, actually the opposite of that, Shell V-Power(premium) has tons of cleaners and detergents in it,it's supposed to clean your engine while you drive. shell brags that it has 5 times the governent required amount of cleaners in it's V-power fuel....

That's probably what MB AMG was referring to as "debris". Don't bet on its "power", long-term effects of using V-Power gasoline are yet to be seen.

Anything below 50 sends my mpg to the low-mid 20s. With 60+ my mpg is in the 29-31 range.

Also on topic of Carbon buildup/valves it is quite interesting becuase I have only used Shell 93 octane in my car and I had to take my car into service becuase of a carbon buildup in the engine. Would be interesting if Shell was a contributing factor, lot people have complained about shell in this forum previously. I have been using Shell since my first car and had no carbon buildup problem. Only once since Vpower ****, i had the carbon buildup problem.

This may have something to do with gas stations changing gasoline formulations according to the season. Just a thought.

The method of calculating the Octane varies in different places so even if you saw 99 octane, then it may be equivalent to 93 in the US. We use the RON method to calculate the octane. I am pretty sure Europe uses some other method.

hmm, i use my grocery stores gas, lol, i get 6 cents off per gallon, seems to be ok, going to corpus once though in the middle of no where i got a bad tank from chevron my car had a major loss of power and sounded really weak

Here in the SF Bay Area, all gas comes from one place.
The refinery in Benicia or whatever town that is...
I dated a women who worked for Shell years ago.
She told me that all the gas came from there.

Then each brand adds just a few drops ONLY of some crap to their gas to make it "V Power" or "Techroline" or whatever. So little as to be worthless.

Now another thing is that here in the Bay Area, we are required to run special city fuel that has lower emissions than fuel sold in rural areas. The formulation must meet gov. standards. The result is a more expensive gas made to a standard, that all comes from the same refinery and the same gigantic tanks, no matter where you buy it.

Now in other parts of the country this may not hold true.
But when it comes to premium fuel, in the bay area, it's all the same.
Now, one time when I was at Sears Point, er Infineon Raceway, who my sig other works for (read free tickets...woo hooo!) I put race fuel in my nearly empty tank, 100+ octane and mixed that with the next stuff down which was like 98.
Didn't make a bit of difference. Likely to take advantage of the higher octane as far as performance you would need to change the settings in the ECU. As far as mileage well, can't say since upon leaving the raceway we sat bunper to bumper for quite a while, and hit lots of traffic so no way to compare.

It is interesting though that Shell does claim better mileage with "V Power" gasoline and you experienced that.
In my younger days, Shell was just crap, and to be avoided like the plaque. Seemed like it had water in it or something. If the price is in line I do prefer Chevron, just because it is rumored to have less carbon buildup as you mentioned, and Union 76, but again...I really don't feel any difference. I have a little FIAT X19, er Bertone X19 that I've had the head off. I run whatever fuel including
Arco. No significant carbon at 100K miles.

I myself average a consistant 22 mpg in the benz and that in line with the loaners I've had too. I like to get on it a little.

Lastly, consumers reports did a test on fuels once.
They found that regular, 87 octane did result in more carbon than the premium fuels, but like I said, here in the
greater SF area, including San Jose and Santa Cruz, and Monterey, it all comes from one source, made one way + a few drops of crap. And most of it now uses ethanol as an
"oxygenator" up to 10% I believe. This replaced MTBE thank god.

Hi everyone, I have been noticing that on my trip computer it shows I am only getting 19 - 23 miles per gallon. I rarely have to fill up my gas tank and I drive a good amount (1500 miles every 5 weeks or so) , so I thought I was just doing fine.
I have not kept track of my actual gas mileage so I am going to have to start. Is this common for a new C230 SS to have low gas mileage? I always hear people saying they are getting 25-30 miles per gallon with these engines, and I want that too. I don't drive like a mad man too often either, so what could it be.
To all you C230 owners what kind of gas mileage are you showing on your trip computer?

I usually drive like crazy and have gotten varied gas mileage. However, I've noticed that in my morning commute where I have to drive somewhat reasonably, I get around 28mpg for a 17 mile commute in mainly highway conditions.

I've gotten 30mpg ONCE, but that was when the car was somewhat new and I didn't drive it hard. After that, I could not repeat the gas consumption to the same location...

On average though, I see 25.7mpg most times.

So after reading that post, I guess the faster your average speed is the better chance you will have better gas mileage. Plus people stated that a new car will get the best gas mileage after 10,000 miles or so. I am somewhat glad to see it is not just me.

with a full gas tank, how many miles can you drive on a C230 before the yellow fuel light goes on ? on the C320, it would light up at about 274 miles.

On a long drive, I get about 400 miles per tank. Otherwise, it's generally around 350 or so.

thanks. i think the yellow light would go on after 14 gallons have been used (2 more gallons left)

so,

274 miles / 14 gallons = 19.6 miles per gallon for C320
and
350 miles / 14 gallons = 25.0 miles per gallon for C230
