Exhaust questions 2006 c230 V6

I am in the process of making a custom dual exhaust for my 2006 C230 and I had the car up in the air this weekend to lower the stock exhaust to make the cut outs I need for the new tips and I noticed a few things about the stock exhaust. On the front just past the engine before the pipes from each side meet I have a small oval canisters on each side. What are these? Second after the pipes come together I have a larger canister is that my CAT or a resonator? Any help would be appreciated!

The first two should be the Cats and the second should be the resonator.

jac1502, I like your stable. Must be a tough choice most days!

If you are trying to achieve a more authoritative exhaust note, just ditch the resonator.

Messing with the (4) catalytic converters is a serious violation of myriad federal statutes. If the KY popo wants to play hardball, you’re screwed. As tested on the dyno and track by several knowledgeable/respected MBWorld members, MB’s exhaust systems are very well designed as delivered. Many who have gutted or straight-piped the cats reported it sounds like a turd.

If losing the resonator is not enough for your ears, an aftermarket muffler beckons.

It's only a tiny V6!

There is an AMG kit available in Europe that increases the pipe diameter, and adds a second muffler for twice pipes on the rear. It is expensive, but includes a new spare tire well to allow for the pipe that runs left to right at the rear. You need to replace or modify the rear valance to make it fit. It is, however, more of a fashion statement than performance part. Sorta like AMG valve stem caps.

I am not looking to run true duals I am splitting the pipes after the muffler and running a passenger exhaust tip. I am going to use an aftermarket muffler and just wanted to remove the resonator. To me the CATS look very small and I was concerned the resonator was actually a CAT

you could put exhaust at the location where your resonator sits now and have the shop y-pipe to both side of the bumper.

Why not just buy the weltmeister muffler?

Finished my project what do you think? I like the setup but wish my tips where a little different. I may go to dual round. I ordered them online so was not sure what they looked like till I got them.

I used a flowmaster 40 and magnaflow tips and a very good mandrel bender. My resonator is still on but it sounds good so not sure if it will go or not.

Give me some feed back!
