The GLI for 24600 is a much better buy than, say, a Civic Si. I also see that the C-class doesn't really depreciate greatly from 100-200k miles.

Yes it was common on 2003 M271 powered cars. We had one that had 3 new heads. Hopefully you can get away with a clean up & valve job but it would be wise to replace the head with the redesigned one.

Hmmmn, this is the first I've heard of the 8 year warranty on emissions... I have a fair amount of rattling going on, and I'm wondering if its my Cat? If it needed replacing, do you think MB would replace it on my 2005??

Search for a thread by PAPete on the subject. He lists all the US legislation that pertains to OEMs having to warrant the emissions system.

Someone mentioned this a page or so ago, but it turned out to be failed chain tensioners that caused the chain to skip a tooth and smash the valve's. $4600.

That was two weeks ago, now it's back in the shop and running rich with no explanation as to why. I'm having the service manager email me the codes, but they've had it for two days and are still stumped. It shakes hard at idle, but seemed to rev smoothly for the 20 feet I drove it before calling for a tow. Their suspicion is supercharger related on the intake side, but we'll see.

Wow, I feel bad for all of you with these problems. I must be lucky. 2003 coupe with 150,000 miles. It's been the most reliable car I have ever owned.

The only under the hood repair was a bad thermostat at 130,000. The engine runs as smooth and quite as when I bought it. It's been 9 1/2 years that I have owned it. I want to get a used SLK because I love them, but I'm having trouble pulling the trigger because my car still runs so well.

We just sold our 2005 c class, rather than spend valve job money. 77,000 miles, but honestly the misfires started around 65,000 miles. We tried everything mentioned; but decided to sell it to carmax and buy a m112.

Pissed off MB owner

Well guys I own the 2003 C230 coupe and I have had nothing but troubles with it. The heads had to be done and that was $4000.00 out of my pocket and the Warranty did not cover it due to Carbon build up! The the trany needed flushing 4 times, the rear defogger stopped working, AC stopped working, locks stopped working within the first month of owning, mirror signal lights do not work. I spent 4 months arguing with the dealer and warranty company and still did not get anywhere, be carefull not to let them do this to you. At this time I am having trouble starting it, the AC stopped again and it will stall every 100km, the oil light keep comming on and the coolent is always too high or too low. It seems as though this car was ment to be replaced a year after it was built. This is the last MB I buy.
