Rain sensor?

My wife and I just got a slightly-used '07 C230. It didn't come with an owner's manual, but the used-car dealer will get it for me in about a week. We're a first-time Mercedes owners. Did the search in this forum, couldn't find anything.

Question: The rearview mirror is attached to the windshield. By standing in the front of the C230, I see some kind of sensors on the windshield (where the rearview mirror is). Do I have a rain-sensing wipers? If not, then what is it?

I have a BMW 335i, and it came with rain-sensing wipers. I thought the C230looked similar to what BMW has...

thanks -charles

Rain sensor is combined with the light sensor, so that can not be the que. Easy to tell, though: just sprinkle some water on it and see if it activates the wipers.

Turn the wipers to position 1 on a sunny day, ignore the first wipe, then see if it wipes again (wait 1-2 min).

I find it useful under some conditions.

How well they work has been asked before, and everyone seems to have different responses. I think they work well, but others say they wipe too fast or too slow. I think it comes down to personal preference. If you have rain sensors, you wont be able to set your own delay speeds, so you'll have to live with it....

I think my rain sensor works well. The only thing I don't like is that if you forget to turn it off, when you start up the car the next time, they run for one cycle. The dry wipers drag across the windshield. In the manual it says to make sure you turn it off, because if you don't the above will happen, possible scratching your windshield. Duh, couldn't they have programmed it to run only when it senses rain after you start up the next time??

I'd have to say that i like them only half the time and that half is when they actually work normally - the other half of the time they wipe way to dam fast. Im thinking should i use some sort of glass cleaner or product that might make the water bead off the sensor area - would that help the wiper in judging how fast/slow to wipe?

I love the rain sensors, especially in So Cal where it rains in a fine mist and stops and starts. The key is to keep the winshield clean as debris in that area confuses it.

....

-- i think the rain wiper sensors are actually on the hood.

-- the sensors that you see for the mirror are probably the day/night sensors as well as the garage door IR

----- these are all "i thinks"

enjoy your new car!!

Thanks. I don't think Garage door remote control is IR. These remotes send out the radio waves.

That's what I thought too. There's a black round sensor type between the hood vents. Unless that is the light sensor instead.

Maybe this is fixed for MY07 but I leave mine in the 1 position ALL the time. They do not wipe when I turn the car on.

The sensor behind the mirror is DEFINITELY the rain sensor. Throw some water or put your hand over it, the wipers wipe immediately.

Enjoy

Good to see that they corrected this. It sounded silly and easy enough to fix. Otherwise I would leave it in the sense position all the time.

I know it's the rain sensor behind the mirror because my last C230, sans sun roof, didn't have the rain sensor so I know the difference.

Rain Sensor

The unit that is behind the mirror houses both the rain sensor and the auto headlight sensor.

The rain sensor works great. Every now and then it goes brain dead and starts wiping in dry weather. Most of the time it does what it should.
