Rear Defroster Problem - slow to defrost
I've searched but couldn't find an answer to this. Anytime I search for "rear defroster" I get a blank result.
But...is the rear defroster supposed to be slow like this? It take me 20 minutes to get to work and it takes that long for the rear to completely defrost. No ice just moisture from the morning.

Turn it on when the window is clear and run a finger over the grid to see if it is warm all over. If not, you may have an open circuit caused by a broken grid. This can happen when cleaning the inside the window. Sometimes it can be repaired with a brush-on solution specially designed for this use. A decent glass shop can test and advise you. If you take your car to a dealer, most often they call a glass shop to come and fix it.
I understand that BMW's come with heated rear window, standard. It is to keep your hands warm in the winter when pushing it.

Rear Defroster Problem
My rear defroster seems to only get hot on the bottom half and the top half slowly defrosts due to the interior heat. Is there separate fuses for the top and bottom rear defroster or does anyone have any insight on this issue. Thanks for all the help.

Mine tends to defrost in the same type of pattern as well. I'm not really sure it's a malfunction.
Check the conductors in the glass just to see if there are any breaks in the line. If there were, I'm not sure it would work anyways, since that would not be a complete electrical circuit at that point.

It seems there is a break in the heating element. Often caused when cleaning the glass or putting things on the rea shelf that damage the element. I have heard of kits available to re-solder the break but I have never had cause to use it. In most cases they just replace the rear glass!!!!!!
