Jerky shifting/transmission!!!

Hey Folks,

1) I have started noticing in the past couple of weeks that if i dont warm up the car for atleast 8 mins in the morning when the temp is around (-6 Celsius) the transmission is real jerky specially from the first to the second gear.

It also happens at other times of the day but when the has been running for like 15-20 mins, the problem becomes less n less noticable.

2)I wud also like to indicate that few months ago I had the famous 15$ vacuum hose leak that had cost me over $500 at the dealer to get fixed, and the car was stalling n stuff at idle and low accelarations...coming to the point since i got it fixed sometimes when i start the car after some period of rest the engine starts to shake real bad as if it will explode out of the hood, i then quickly turn it off and then wait a few moments and turn it back on....that solves the problem...so any clues what it cud be? am i having the same vacuum leak again..if so then it only happens once in a week and its fixed when i restart it!

ur input is very much appreciated.

yeah the cold starts are common, when the engine is not at a operating temp it will bring the rpms up in order to compensate....thus the jerking into second gear.

Mines the same on initial start. Then it comes and goes when the car is completely warmed up.

I actually have that same thing where the engine will shake violently until I turn the car off and back on. It is very rare though, maybe once every 6 months. No vacuum hose leak for me. I just deal with the case of the shakes every so often and turn it off and back on and it solve the problem. Car doesn't seem to behave any differently.

2005 C230 K
Does your 1-2 shift not feel as good as the others shifts in general? That is the case with my 2005 230K. Sometimes it feels like the synchros are just barely getting the job done from 1-2. The other shift are much more positive with a satisfying "click."

Vacuum Leak

I too have the shifting problem, only when it's very cold, and during the first few minutes of driving. After that, it's fine...

I also had the vacuum hose leak problem.

Read the thread I posted on my problem.
Rough Idle

But yeah, my dad and I fixed the vacuum leak. I'm sorry you paid so much to fix it. My dad bought a hose for $3 at a local store, and it's made stronger than the original hose Mercedes put in the c230. It connected to the supercharger perfectly. Now the car runs great.

I don't know which car you have, but if you have a c230 from 2003-2005, make sure you read this: Cam Sensors Issue - M271
