w203 C180 Kompressor
Help wanted on '02 W203

Hello,

We have a problem with a '02 c180 kompressor (w203). Right after starting in the morning and pulling the shifterhandle into drive or reverse, the engine starts to hickup, occasionaly stalls for about 30 seconds. After that the problem is no longer at hand. We changed the airflowmeter, throttlehousing and both O2 sensors. Nothing helped. We don't know where to resolve the problem anymore. Please advice or give directions where to search.

Thanks in advance,

It sounds more like a transmission/tourque converter or sensor issue if it runs fine in park and just does it when putting it in gear----

Hi, it's been to a transmission specialist and after 2 days it returned with the remark no problems at all. And if it is a sensor, how come it runs ok after 30 seconds? And why isn't there any wrong data when we record it? My guess is, there is a "leak" or something in the vacuumsystem, but that's pretty hard to detect and the same remark comes here, why running brilliantly after 30 secs.

Solved

Hello to you all,

Problem is found. The distribution chain is stretched to much which causes the timing to get get out of range. When the engine warms up, the variable timing corrects this so it seems to be solved, but actually it isn't. So 4hrs of labor and a new chain resolves this issue.

Thanks to all of you who'm tried to help.

Richard.

Yes, just a chain change. Guides, guards, tensioners and sensors are all ok!! Chain is just too much stretched. If a problem like this occurs to one of you, check the basic parameters. Cylinder 3 was switched on and off 113 times in just 5 minutes the engine was idling. Because the problem seems to resolves itself when the engine got warmer, that suggested that the valve seats where ok. If not the engine would run badly cold and warm. From an insider at MB I learned that headproblems are covered by special out-of-warranty arrangement here in Europe for cylinderheads with worn valve seats. Lukely no head change.

Good luck to you all,
Richard.
