icing on the cake - aka key thread chapter 4
No no no sir, it won't work.
I pull out show him the buttons. This goes through service writing, to service bay, to parts... the place is up for grabs. Every single one of the employees was like "why did they do that?"
Long and short of it, the service guy thought that my figuring that out was cool enough to merit him giving me a shell from a sedan key for my one good remaining key. After all, the button's there, shouldn't I be able to hit it!?
I hope all of your hunts with this new feature as fun as mine.

P.S. some of you said the button doesn't work -- you must HOLD IT DOWN for a few moments. It's not like, push-click, it's more like, hold hold hold, clunk.

You Coupe owners don't have a sedan manual, of course, so I want to reiterate what Peet says about holding the button. Instructions for sedan owners is exactly that. You must hold the button down 2-3 seconds before the truck latch releases. Since this is the routine for the sedan, it has to be the same with the Coupe, as well. It makes sense that this prevents inadvertant, unintentional trunk openings.
How hard do you have to push it?? I just stood out in my garage pressing it as hard as I could for as long as I could and the hatch never popped up. I have a '02 Coupe. Is it possible that not every key has that, or am I just weak?

Mine won't open, either.
Try removing the inards...you don't want to crack the key

But seriously, this post made me extremely interested in my key. How do you take it apart? Is it in teh manual, I dont' really feel like going into teh garage anymore, it's freezing in there. I've been trying everythign to make the key work! (ie-pushing it with the metal key, pushing it down with a flat screw driver ... nothing works)
Mine doesn't seem to work either. I've only tried it without taking it apart, but I pushed hard enough to leave a little indent from my keyring. I guess maybe some have it and some don't.
I don't have the panic button on my casing either...so I got two little surprises!
You guys "down under" don't get the panic alarm feature on your key? BTW, you have to hold that button for a couple seconds also (like the trunk/hatch) to activate the alarm.

Seriously, I've only seen the panic button on a few MBs here...I think they only give it to the owners that had the alarm installed at factory.

Us Ozzies don't know the meaning of the word "panic"!!

Interesting - I thought all HU on late models came with built in alarm features. Even the "lowly" Audio30 tape deck has it. And don't start another "You American...."
Young, I haven't tried the panic button as the part of the key where the panic button should be is the hardest part of the key...I guess I could try pushing the button directly while holding the battery up against the contact.
btw guys, do any of you know which wire of the audio 30 or US stock HU connects to the alarm system? I'm tyring to find the wire that makes the red light blinking cuz I want to install a strobe light to go with that. Or do you guys have other suggestion?
