is it easier to get to the farther end of the hose if the airbox is completely removed?

my car is in for its last service A (my warranty runs out in 1.5 months) and if i can get this done now i'd rather get it done at their expense than have to do it a few months down the road...

THX ... great write up btw

w203 c180 Kompressor
w203 2003 c180 kompressor m271 rough idle missfire

Giday - Great post!

I have a 2003 w203 c180 Kompressor with the m271 engine.

The vehicle started fine and then ran VERY rough at idle but drove well.

The following error / fault codes were logged

41 Mixture adaption at maximum control stop
27 Ignition failure recognition cylinder 1
26 Catalytic converter deterioration misfire cylinder 1
28 Mixture adaption too rich under partial power
70 Lambda sensor upstream of cat aged

Actual problem was a split pcv hose as described in your post. The computer responds to the air leak by dumping fuel into the engine making the vehicle run too rich.

Had i gone down the track of new oxygen sensors, spark plugs, ignition coil packs and air flow meter i would be about $4100.00 out of pocket.

Thanks for saving me the work and dollars.

No, It's a positive crankcase vent line. It takes the gases that build up in the crank case and redirect them to the intake to be burned up and vented off. If the hose is cracked it will leak vacume from the intake. The upper line is the one with the biggest problem but both should be changed because they where made with the wrong material.

So both these hoses are the ones replaced under the service campaign? Is the vacuum hose just as easy to fix as the PCV?

yeah i got both them hoses changed. my first engine light was for the pcv hose. so that was replace. the car vibrated. then a couple months later another check engine light. they replaced a vent hose for that as well. then i had this rattling noise in the engine and found out it was a worn out belt tensioner, stc. all replaced.

Well i just got struck with this.

Last night it started to idle rough, then the CEL came on. I just took it to the dealership (Fletcher Jones) and the agreed that was the problem. They're fixing it at no charge because it was a recall. They also found out that my 'amplifier antennae' (or what ever it is) is shorting out and that some of the bushing are warn. This is all covered under warranty. Good thing i brought it in.

Rant: Don't go to Desert Auto Group if you are looking to buy a car here in Las Vegas!

My brother has had MANY issues with them. And now here is one more of my issues with them.
I don't know if this is required, but if your a dealership and you decide to place a car for sale, wouldn't you check to make sure all recalls are taken care of before selling it?? This recall was in march. I bought my car this July. Just sayin.

Just wanna thank Slammer111 and everyone else who contributed towards this thread... replaced my hose and thanks to this thread it was actually extremely easy...

Original hose was split in about 3 places and definately needed changing but unfortunately in S.A. there is no recall

Yet another victim. That's odd there is no recall in South Africa.

Is indeed sad that there is no recall here in South Africa but if I remember correctly the guys in Canada have the same problem... Just one of those issues we kinda have to live with... just like the cam sensors

***UPDATE***

I received a letter from MB Canada the other day re: a hose that may cause "rough operation" if left unchecked. Probably the same hose again. Finally, a year after everyone in USA got the recall

However, my SA gave me a DIFFERENT part number for the hose they're sticking in.
271-010-00-82-05 (no idea what the 05 means)

**update** the above PN is for the updated kit that includes all 3 hoses, check valve, 4x intake manifold o-rings and 4x lower injector o-rings. MB has since discontinued the kit, at least in Canada.

Looks like nobody linked this thread to this one.

One of the mods may want to merge these 2 threads.

The $12 hose may have been superceded yet again!
For f*cks sake, hopefully our resident expert Glyn M Ruck can help out. I'll PM to take a look at this thread.

hey guys....my 2003 c230 just starting shaking at low idle when i first start it up after it sits for awhile (usually over night). i goes away within a few minutes and im wondering if this might be the issue. (or 02 sensor) i will check out the hose first. also wanted to share this website that seems to have some cheap MB parts online and ships really fast. i bought my endlinks here and they were great to deal with. i found the breather hose here for $9 and some change. http://www.mercedesshop.com/

Glyn does not seem to know why there's yet another part number (05) yet that is the part number that has been around for nearly 2 years.

WTF!

When I changed mine, July 2007, only the 04 part number was available. Someone must know what the difference is! and 5 revisions! ARG, MB, get it right!

Can you give me the part numbers of the lower hose parts to be replaced? I replaced the top hose and still have the issue.

Strangely enough, that's all I've got. On that invoice as well:

3x 002-997-24-90 Cable Tie
1x 001-997-69-90 Hose Clamp

If this helps, it was Campaign A2008110003 Vent Hose Recall. (this is Canada)

I would like to thank everyone for this thread, you just saved me a lot of $$$ and my car is torquey again.. (rediculously so, now that it's modified AND running well).

Trouble started maybe 5 months back now that i think about it, with the car not running quite as smoothly any more...

Started throwing a CEL last week...

Took into my mechanic (who has all the MB diagnostic equipment) to do a 60,000KM tranny oil + filter + Service A...

He reset the CEL and asked me to see if it came back again.

Sure enough it did.. I started thinking about the car (the rough idle, the low vacuum (i have a vacuum boost gauge), the rich mixture) and figured it must be this hose...

My mechanic was thinking along the lines of a new fuel pump / injectors / spark plugs ... as is customary for the Codes that he read off...

Instead I picked up this hose for 12 bux here in Saudi and left the car with him for 2 days...
Come back today and pickup the car, paid him 100 bux for labour and it's a monster (more so than ever)

Mods:
K&N Filter
1 step colder iridium plugs
Sprint booster automatic
HKS 60mm throttle inlet elbow
2nd cat deleted and replaced with 2.25" mid section (stock mid section is around 1.75" out of the cat)
2.25" catback with a remus mid silencer and an Apexi WS2 custom rear silencer

more to come soon... but the last two mods were done it seems while the hose was already flawed...now that everything's fixed... the thing is awesome ... truly awesome

hey guys.., i knew there was oil on the lower o2 sensor hose so i took it off and cleaned it with wire cleaner.. this is prob why my o2 sensors went out...but i have a question... how did oil leak from the cam adjuster connectors all the way down to the lower o2 sensor??.... cause they are not even close to each other??? shold i be worried of oil getting into other spots of the engine? when i took the bottom pannel off i could not notice any oil..
