Reduce Engine Oil Level

Has anyone had a dash board message "reduce engine oil level" I have had this Intermittently perhaps once every 4 months or so. I decided to change the sending unit yesterday.

Anyone with this same problem?

How much oil did you put in?

It looks like you are driving a C240. When my 2001 C240 was new, we kept getting that message. The oil capacity listed in the owners manual indicates 8.5 quarts. It didn't take Mercedes long to figure out this is wrong and it should actually be 8 quarts. If you only pour in 8 quarts and still receive the message, then I would probably replace the sensor.

Not true....capacity is actually 8.5 quarts. "Reduce engine OIL level" is a common problem after an oil change if all the used oil isn't removed and then given a full fill. If the oil suction tube isn't inserted fully you only get a partial evacuation. What oil level is shown using the 'dyno mode'?

I get this message now and then since the dealer did the last oil change but I figure the dealer is a moron and has messed up 3 oil changes for me already, so they are batting about 500 on oil changes alone, don't even ask me about repairs. Yes, MB of LB is that bad.

Been getting the reduce oil level warning since the last couple of dealer oil changes.....I just did a DIY oil/filter change....took time to drain from below to be sure to get all the old oil out....book says 8.5 quarts...I put in 8....still get reduce oil level warning

Should I take out more??

Is there a way to tell if sensor is bad ??

HELP !!!!

Did you loosen/remove the oil filter cap so the contents could drain as well? If you don't, it's possible almost a quart is left in even though you drained until it stopped dripping. Have you tried the dyno mode yet to check your oil level? If you're sure ALL the oil is drained and only put in 8 quarts and the "Reduce..." still comes on then the sensor can't be good or in properly. I don't know for sure but I bet there's only one sensor and the dyno mode uses it as well.

Thank you
Access to dyno mode is different depending on the year of your car. You have to follow the sequence exactly to get the mode to show up. For my car it's:

1. No key in ignition
2. Insert key, turn to position 1
3. Press "Page Down" steering wheel button (lower right button on the left side) to select any MFD display other than the trip odometer or you will reset your trip odo)
4. Press and hold the reset button (left edge of instrument cluster) until you hear a beep...takes a while, about a minute
5. Press "Page Down" button again once
6. You will see the dyno mode display with oil level values in 'dashes'
7. Turn key to position 2 and wait until system measures oil (several seconds)

Why are you checking it with engine running? Where does it say to start the car I get 7.5 qts. in dyno mode after complete drain and fill with 8.5 qts. I don't think you're getting a complete drain.

Can anyone state conclusively the sump capacity of a C240?

I'm a new member. I have owned a late 2003 C240 Elegance from new. South African build. Zero problems. Great car - only quible ever was noisy Conti Sport Contact 2 tyres. Removed in disgust & replaced with Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2's 225/50/16 - silent and superb!

Yesterday I had the 45,000 Km service done and once again confusion ensued regarding how much oil to put in the car. Dealer spec states 7.5 litres for my VIN number. My Owner's Manual states 8 litres with filter for C240 and 7.5 litres for C240 4 matic.

Elsewhere in these forums the same question has arisen in another thread with no conclusion. In fact a scan of the Capacities page of an earlier Owner's Manual is included stating 7 litres for the 4 matic & 7.5 litres for the RWD.

Does anybody have a definitive answer to this? Did the sump capacity change at some time during production of the W203 series?

Any clarification by your esteemed members would be much appreciated
Regards

2006 CLS55 AMG(this week)
I'm getting the error that comes on as well where my instrument panel lights up red then I get a message about the oil level being too high. I've attached this pic below of the dyno mode. I did just get done driving about 45 minutes ago and I'm curious if someone can tell me if this is normal or not?

Also I just happened to notice in Dyno mode my car says AMG E55 when in fact I Have a CLK55 AMG does anyone have any clue why this would be?

Because it's the same engine/tune?

+1 - They never get all the oil out & should refill on dyno mode. Then you won't get over level warnings. Put it in dyno mode & suck a little oil out & all will be fine. Too much oil in the engine is bad news!

All it means is that it has the E55 software loaded & probably for the reason you state mleskovar

I'm not car expert by any means but I just got it changed 2 days ago. It's supposed to have 8.5 quarts and it has 9 so I didn't think that was off by a large amount, perhaps I'm wrong? Regardless I will siphon out 1/2 quarts and get it back down to 8.5.

Couple of questions:
Should I be concerned it was running a 1/2 quart high for a couple of days? Permanent damage to the engine?

Since a 1/2 quart of used oil was left in there is simply siphoning out 1/2 quart going to be beneficial or should I have the entire oil re-changed?

Running overfull by half a quart is unlikely to cause trouble over a few days - just get it out. No need for another oil change. You can never get all the oil out of these cars - siphon or bottom drain. The small amount of old oil is so diluted that it makes no difference. It does however catalyse oxidation in the new oil charge but the cars are designed & serviced with this in mind. Fortunately they have large sumps so the oil charge is not stressed.

The physical symptom on the m112 & m113 engines of too much oil is smoking. It pours out smoke from the exhaust as the oil forces its way past the seals. I don't think 1/2 quart would cause damage but I wouldn't leave it in there. 1/2 quart of dirty oil = 6% which shouldn't be a big deal.

Can anyone tell me how much oil should be in the car?

I just got an oil changed and warning light came on. I went into dyno mode and it said 8.7

I took out a quart and now it says 7.5. Should I put a little more in?

Don't add more. 8.5 quarts is the correct amount but dyno mode can be misleading. I did a check on mine by first draining the sump completely, then adding oil and checking the known oil added against the dyno mode readout. Dyno mode showed about .75 quarts less than was actually in the motor. I attribute that to the oil held in the filter.
