First pics of my COMAND retrofit!!

Almost a plug and play application. Very little effort was done by MBenzNL (Steve) edit: because he knew what he was doing.

You can only get the staion info on a radio equipped with RDS, and if the station is broadcasting the RDS info. The stock MB-Alpine cassette headunit is no RDS equipped. The Becker Audio 10 many people have changed to is RDS capable.

The 203 Command system is 1000USD; the OEM MB 203 GPS Antenna is about 65USD
and can be installed under the dash (mercedes's own personal suggestion when
after market adding OEM MB navigation systems). You need some GPS cables
parts as well (approx 40USD)

Sweet! How long does it take to do the install? Why do you need a GPS antenna? Isn't there one for the teleaid already?

According to MB regarding aftermarket comand retrofit, they recommend mounting the antenna under the dash. You could also utilize your Teleaid antenna and use a splitter but it's simply more work. MB recommends this so that's how my antenna was installed.

Euro version comands:

All of the funtions work very well. Euro comands will not have Teleaid assist regarding traffic info and such. Instead they have a button called SYS, which is used for setting time and brightness and such.

Euro comands has a TV button funtion where you could attach a TV tuner or DVD players and such.

The female voice that speaks has an English accent!

RDS works very well. In some stations it lets you know what song is playing and the artist who's singing it both in your instrument cluster and the comand interface. The Kost 103.5, I even get the Stock Market info until they close, very cool

Steve has several more in stock along with all the connectors and antenna required, they are going really fast.

I am working on editing the step by step instructions for you all with pictures.

My recollection - based on someone's report - is that US COMAND units offer no improvement in sound quality compared to the stock US cassette stereo (Audio 30). I wonder if the sound part of Euro COMAND is on par with Audio 10... Anyone?

I've heard Audio 10, Command, and the Bose system...sound QUALITY on all three was about the same...this is determined more by the speaker placement, type of speaker/driver, etc... However, bass on the Audio 10 and the Command system are marginally better than the Bose setup. I think the Bose enabled head unit only has a +/- 6 dB adjustment on the bass, where both the Audio 10 and Command sound like the usual +/-12dB. That's my take on it...if someone has the specs on all three, please post em, I'm rather curious if I'm correct.

I wouldn't dump the standard Bose unit for the Audio 10, which is a downright ugly unit with not much to offer besides slightly more bass and the single in dash disc player, but damn, that COMAND system is slick. Didn't someone post a few weeks back that on the European units you can get broadcast TV with an adaptor? That would be slick...no more missing football on Sundays driving back from out of town

Class C, very nice!!!!

Actually, I was told that the TV function shuts off when the car speed is more than 10km/hr or 6 mile/hr...the dealer is able to remove this safety feature if you can convince him to do so.

There is no such thing as Bose head unit. The standard cassette head unit offered in the US (aka Audio 30) is made by Alpine. I (like many here) have replaced mine with Audio 10 (by Becker) and the difference is HUGE. I've got a Bose upgrade option. It includes an external amp and different speakers compared to the standard setup.
My question was whether the Euro COMAND unit is better than the US COMAND as far as its sound is concerned (or, is the difference as big as in case of Audio 10 compared to Audio 30).

A side note: it's called "COMAND", not "Command".
