This bollocks about leaving old oxidised & contaminated fluid in the system being somehow better for the transmission than new fluid is absolute nonsense. A complete change will always be the best possible thing you can do.

Whining noises - IF YOU ARE SURE THEY ARE COMING FROM THE TRANSMISSION - are almost always a sign of Torque converter/input shaft bearing damage.

Make absolutely sure you are not talking about tyre pumping noise due to design or feathering & cupping of the tread. Does this whine occur with the car stationary?

Yeah, I was thinking about that last night.
I had Ferderal 595 tires, which weren't bad tires, but wow they HOWLED!
I thought my tranny or diff was ready to blow.

If you can lay your hands on a a 2nd set of wheels and tires, try it out.

Ok we heard it from the expert.
Keeping old crappy fluid in your tranny being a good thing is BS!!!

whining noise from 30mph ~ 50mph and droning,whistling noise from 50~80 mph

Dr Ruck and C230... Thanks for the great advice... Yes, I know its not the tires. I had that howling noise before thinking it was the front wheel bearings and when I went to a new set of four bridgestones the noise went a way. The car sounded brand new. I had this howling noise for a while not being too loud. That link from your last post describes whats happening. I guess the next step is to do a full flush converter and pan. But do I drop the pan again and replace the seal and filter? Its been a couple of weeks? Can i just flush the oil in the pan by removing the plug? How can I tell its not the rear differential mounts or any other mounts from the tranny rear wards. thanks again guys. Oh yea, the noises appear only when the care starts to accelerate and decelerate (20mph to 80mph) with increasing and decreasing pitch. Also when I did the quick tranny flush, I did change the TCU plug adapter. It had the new orings on it already.

According to dealer, that is. It has been 80k miles and haven't had it done yet. It shifts fine. At least for now. I read this whole thread from the beginning. I am taking it to an indy so I think what I need to provide are as follows: replacement seals, mb certified tranny fluid. Anything else I need?

4-5 if you just drop the pan and replace what you took out + the filter, and then leave another 4-5 quarts of dirty fluid in the tranny, mix good fluid with bad.
OR do the full flush, and since you are flushing, some good mixes with bad and it takes a few extra quarts to get it to come out nice and clean, so
in that case the MB recommended amount is 14 quarts.
It'll start to flow clean once around 11-12 quarts, and then one or 2 extra if you need to top it up like I did as I was tired and took out more than i put back in, ha. I was pumping 2 quarts out at a time and somewhere along the line, I only put one in.
I ended up using 13 quarts total last time.
Also I've taken to replacing the orings each time which means buying the whole plastic piece.

I have been hearing this noise before I leave, when stationary Trying to put it off so I can do it all at once.

My vehicle makes a slow whine during accelerations in all gears, and while stationary.... very quiet, you have to listen for it... but its there... more noticeable from 2 to 3. I did just change out my pan (no magnet), seal and TCU connector... and yes, its still there... hmmmn....

Probably not the transmission as your 2005 has the 722.6, which I have yet to see this input bearing issue on. It seems to be a 722.9 problem.

boom - this is absolutely normal for the 722.6 if it's the noise I'm thinking of. You can only hear it with the radio off - Yes? Don't worry.

Seems to be transmission week on the forum.

Yes, I only hear it with the radio off... kinda reminds me of that whine you'd recieve through the radio speakers in the "olden" days...

It's a characteristic of the whole power/drivetrain on these cars. I noticed it when driving my new C240 off of the showroom floor 8 years back. They are so quiet that you can pick up that the NVH engineering is not perfect. They also kick up a slight harmonic at about 90Km/h (56 mph).

A question. MB USA doesn't recommend full-tranny-flush and someone says full flush void warranty.

Is this because MB USA dealers sucks? I'm wondering what is the standard official MB procedure for 60K tranny fluid change in the rest of the world. They do pan drop or full flush?

A full flush can never void a warranty.

In ROW fluid & filter changes are done EVERY 39K miles or 60K Km's

You always have to drop the pan to change the filter & clean the magnet.

In ROW:

722.6 5 speed half change due to no TC drain & fluid inspection. If fluid deteriorated full flush with hand pump & +- 14 quarts of fluid.

722.9 7 speed full change including TC which has a drain plug.

The 7 speed is harder on fluid than the 5 speed because there is more gearing to lubricate & under all situations it executes more gear changes than the 5 speed.

Glyn, thank you very much for the detailed explanation. Your post is always very informative and I learned many things.

I don't think I can tell if the fluid is deteriorated or not by myself, so I would try to do full flush. (The radiator is not the Valeo, so I don't think it has water leak.)

C230 V6 coupe 2005
I've been looking at these threads and found lots of info, sadly(maybe I missed it) nothing on eradic shifts. My C230 V6 Coupe(2005) has no filler/level check tube. It is a 6speed with tiptronic. Driving along in D and slowing it does not down shift. Stopping it stays in 5th or 6th. Lately, even in selective shift, it would stay in 1st. I have to shift to P and switch of the ignition to get it to go in to park. The lever shifts fine, but mostly no appropriate reaction from the tranny... Is it fluid, controller or tranny?

I think you either have 2005 with a 5 speed auto (C320) or a 2006 c230 w/7speed.

Todd,
The M272/722.9 launched ahead of the US in SA.

Petdino - welcome. It could be any of the above as these transmission are electronic over hydraulic control. Please get hold of an OBDII scanner that can read transmission codes and post those codes here. It will stop a lot of guessing.

Thanx Glyn,
Had it on the star last week. Cleared a couple of faults, none on the gearbox though.
Diagnostic reset came back good except for 1 fault on the RH ext door miror indicator.
Will take it back to the dealer for a new print-out.
