That would violate the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 which prohibits requiring tie-in sales. That is, they CAN'T require usage of only their products. They instead must require products that meets specifications.

MY Owner's Manual states: "Only brake fluid approved by Mercedes-Benz is recommended."

MY Factory Approved Service Products June 2004 manual states: "Brake Fluid (DOT 4 Plus) MB Brake Fluid 1.00l 000.989 08 07 01, MB Brake Fluid 5.00l 000 989 08 07 11, or Mobil Brake Fluid DOT4 Plus. (The Mobil brake fluid does NOT show up on the US site, only on the German Mobil web site.)

All I know is that I would rather spend a little bit more on MB brake fluid, then a different fluid that should meet the requirements. Brakes are kinda important, and I wouldnt want to risk damage by using other fluid.

They specify products the DO meet the requirements. The '04 manual included with my '05 lists two. There may be additional acceptable products on a more current list.
