Since i'm here already , Frank: What do you suggest for my M111 ? i tried 0w-40, but just burns about 2 qts between oil changes as sportcoupe already stated(little heavy on the gas pedal here).
What should i use, a higher vicosity? Change the oil brand? or add one of those syntethic oil stabilizers?
I do not have the owners manual , that's one of the reasons im asking.

Run on Mobil 1 229.5 product - NO ADDITIVES - just tolerate the oil consumption.

All additives do is screw up a finely balanced premium oil formulation & take it out of spec. Why is your car using oil? If the engine needs rings then you can run higher viscosity non approved oil for a while but you are just delaying the inevitable - an engine rebuild. Most likely cause of oil consumption is valve stem seals. If you run against compression & then floor the throttle do you get a puff of oil smoke out of the exhaust? If so you need to at least replace valve stem seals & maybe valve guides. What mileage has the car done? You have a M111 engine - Yes? - They are rough but tough - But valve stem seals harden at high mileage. Might be an idea to send an oil sample to Blackstone at your next oil change to see what wear rates look like.

Thanks for taking your time explaining eveything, im at 92k right now. How hard is it to change those valve seals and guides?. Usually means new chain & tensioners. I've seen some reports on pulley rattle on the M111 as well but this should not be affected by standing..
Suggest you contact C230 Sport Coup - he has fitted an oil catch tank & could give you some advice on oil coming through the inlet system.

LK - 92K is not a long way for a well maintained M111 - It is a very durable engine. More so than the M271. Elastomer components like seals nevertheless age. If you need to change guides the head must come off. If you only need to change seals you need to find a pet indy mechanic that is prepared to have a go at holding the valves in place with compressed air or mechanical means while removing the collets & springs & replacing the seals with the head in place.
The rattle after standing is quite common, & likely the timing chain rattling before the oil pressure comes up & the hydraulic tensioners kick in properly. Usually means new chain & tensioners. I've seen some reports on pulley rattle on the M111 as well but this should not be affected by standing..

Hi Guys,
I have a quick question with an upcoming Service B I am going to perform on my newly purchased 2006 C280 4MATIC. I have been reading the forums like a mad man and think I am pretty well coached as to what I am required to do and how to go about the various maintenance items (thanks to Service B sheet found on this forum and # of DYI threads). The only issue leaving me stumped is whether I can use Valvoline SynPower 5w-30 or 5w-40. At the moment Schucks (aka PartsAmerica) has 1QT of the above oil(s) for .99 AR. Unfortunately Schucks does not carry the MST version as prescribed by Mercedes -- Found Here. From what I can see the Synpower MST has a 11.7 visc@100C versus the regular Synpower has 10.7 visc@100C.
What adds to my confusion, according to Valvoline's product info page ((Found Here), the SynPower 5W-40 is pending OEM approval for MB 229.51 which has closer specs to Mobil 1 0W-40 such as 14.5 visc@100C versus 14 visc@100C and 89 visc@40C versus 78.3 visc@40C, respectively. Mobil 1 details Found Here. So that makes me think the 5w-40 is a better choice.
I live in Anchorage Alaska where the temps range from ~80s in the summer to -20 in the winter. I do not want to ultimately do harm to my engine nor void my warranty. What do you guys advise?

Use Valvoline Full Synthetic 5 W 30. It has never steered me wrong.

Where I shop now for OIL in CA. Valvoline Full Syn 5W30/OW20 is 2 bucks more for a 5 quart jug than Mobil 1 5W30/OW20, if you can get ANY Valvoline product for a Dollar buy it man...Valvoline is super oil!

0W-40's are world oils that will work from the Arctic to the Sahara desert, In mild California use 5W-40.

I live in Lebanon and prior to this, I was using Fuchs TITAN Supersyn LONGLIFE 5W-40 from the dealership which is supposed to be a 229.5 oil and should last 21,000 km - 13,000 miles when used with a fleece filter (I use MANN).
However, when I used that oil for 10,000 km - 6,000 miles, my mechanic and I noticed sludges in the engine and went back to a 5-6,000 km change interval or 3,100 miles.
As I did some researched, I learnt from a local high-level expert that this Fuchs TITAN Supersyn LONGLIFE is made in the Gulf (most probably United Arab Emirates) and that its quality is not as good as the same oil made in Europe. He was specific about some lab processes not being done correctly and enough for oil to last 13,000 miles like Mobil 1 or other 229.5 oils.
So, because of the above, I decided to try out other 229.5 products available in my country and I came across Valvoline products. The story here is that 229.5 lists Valvoline SynPower HST 5W-40 where I could only find Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-40.
I did some further research on MST vs HST, but could not get enough information on whether it would still be better than the Fuchs TITAN crap that I've been forced to using. Any advice on this would be highly appreciated.
Other 229.5 oils available in my country are the ELF Evolution 900 FT 5W-40 and MOTUL 8100 X-cess 5W-40 (too expensive).
