I also have been putting the car in Neutral going down hills slopes... But can this hurt the motor? By putting it back into drive while moving or before coming to a stop? Would like to know thanks..

It can hurt the transmission, and it apparently doesn't matter to do what you're doing. According to some more knowledgeable than I, when the car detects that you are no longer requesting acceleration (and you're not idling at a light), such as when you're rolling down a hill, the engine cuts off fuel delivery. So it should be the same, in theory, for you just not to press on the gas going downhill.

Shifting in and out of neutral at speed usually causes more wear on the transmission, and I don't recommend it. Remember: you're not driving a manual transmission which shifts for you, but an automatic transmission with a completely different mechanical setup that is not meant to be shifting in and out of neutral often.

You kinda had it Scott. Only, it's not cuz I hate to fill up (i.e. not laziness), but I just pay attention to how often I fill up so I can keep track of spending trends for budgeting purposes. None of my comments were geared towards how "efficient" my car is because with my mods, it's not really fair to compare "efficiency."

All-in-all, my current mods, I'm pretty happy w/ the mpg's. trip odometer says it gets between 17-18mpg (streets only), which is right around where the "sticker" indicated for this car (maybe 1 mile off, which is good considering my mods).

See mine sips it pretty well. Freeway driving on mine gets me 26-29mpg. Totally acceptable to me.

Just got back from doing a run from Providence, RI to New Haven, CT, which was about 250 miles round trip. Had slightly less than 1/2 tank left, and figured, what the h*ll, I'll try and see how far I get. Well, made it all the way and back!! Average speed was around 60-65mph. MPG: 35.5 . It was really really close, as the low fuel light was on about 20 minutes into the ride back home.

By the time I got back to Providence, my "distance" screen was showing 0 miles and the needle was right at the zero line. Had about 12 more miles to go to where I normally fill up (Shell, $3.97/gallon for 93 Ultra), and man I was nervous because that 0 miles kept staring at me. Made it no problem though.

Wonder how much further I could have gone. I think I remember hearing that our cars have a 2 gallon reserve. But not sure if the "distance" screen takes this reserve into account or not.

Anyways, still not my high of 36.7 mpg, but pretty close. My car also hit the 30,000 mile mark tonight.

Don't complain guys! I live in Finland and gas is about 9 US dollars per gallon. Its terrible. I have only a C180 because of the high gas prices. I get about 420 miles per tank of gas. Maybe a little more when I am really careful.

I figured to also add here that the only choices of oct level is 95 and 98... from reading the other posts maybe that helps in me getting more miles, of course the smaller engine does too.

My car goes about 200 miles on a 16 gallon tank of premium (around town). I KNOW my car in not efficient by that number.
What I meant, was see the range I gave? How many miles we get on a tank is not a true indicator of efficiency. Since we are not all filling up the tank with the SAME EXACT amount of fuel each and every time, there is a large variation.

As for me, yes E85 is less efficient (~22% on my fuel spreadsheet), but it is quite a bit less expensive than premium (~35-40%).

Hey, Drex, I hope you know I was just yanking your chain a bit. Of course I implied you were lazy.

Of course, of course...but I guess, for the older members that know I am already, I kinda take it for granted. Sometimes gotta throw the newbs a bone here and there!

2004 C320 Coupe, 6 spd manual.
I have been getting an average of 18-20mpg city and 28mpg highway. On longer drives I have gotten 32mpg, with the cruise control and the A/C on full blast. I typically shift at 2500 rpms while city driving. About 320-360 miles to the tank.

This is a manual C320. The only mod, if you can call it that, is a different brand of air filter. I went with K&N, I figure that they do the same as Green air filters, and they were readily available at the local parts store.

Here's my ride, 2004 Sport Coupe.
