Seat Problem

my c320 is having a really wired problem. the power seat worked perfect when i got out of the car to go to class. then when i came back i closed the door put the key in the ignition and the seat didn’t move forwards. i played with the switch and heard a clicks from under the seat. it could do everything but forwards and back. i drove half way home and hit the memory button and the seat went to its proper position. i then went forward and back all the way and it seemed fine. i then parked the car and went forward and back again but now it wont move again. any ideas. i do have new seat modules (i think that is what they are called) they have 07 on them so i don’t think that is the problem. and the switch seems to work because i hear a click from the module. any ideas my best guess is the motors but searched on here and found only one person who had a bad motor. so i have no idea hope somebody has seen this before.

ok well just got in car again for a quick run to the store and the seat started working but i think needed to be synced so i ran it all the way back and heard a hoirble noise and i think it started to come off the tracks so i slowley got it back on but found two little pices that had come off below is a pic.

so i fixed this a long time ago and got a pm about someone else with this problem. they are the clips that tell the car that the seat is as far back as it can go. they are really easy to put back on. look at the other seat and just push them on just like the other side. then re sync your seat. hope this helps someone.

This doesn't really help, but I had the easy-entry feature set on my car for about three weeks after I got it. Then I thought "I don't really need this, and it's just excess wear on these components". So I disabled it. I really didn't find it useful and had wondered if anyone else really used it.

I use it, but most of the time i dont realize that my steering wheel or seats are moving back, its so natural to me. Im so used to it, its just there. I get into other cars and wonder why i have trouble getting into them, as i am over 6 feet tall and go to the gym every other day, you get the picture.

Oh yeah, I'm like 5'6". I also noticed that my car would sometimes not bring the steering wheel down, even though the seat moved forward automatically. A gremlin, perhaps? Or maybe I did something wrong and interrupted it - like shifting out of Park. Who knows, I have no use for the feature although having the memory seats was a deal-breaker. I had to have that package, and I do.

yeah i used it till it stopped working because those clips came out. then since the seat stopped moving i turned the wheel off too. so when i fixed it i tried it out, it worked and i tuned it back off. right around the time i fixed this i read a post about the motor for the wheel burned out or something and it was an expensive fix. i then decided that i am young and not tall enough to really need the seat and wheel to move every time i get out. i thought i might be the only one who actually turned off a convince feature lol.

Trey, any more info on this? Do they fall off completely? I had the easy exit feature for the seats enabled on my 07 by Sunil shortly after getting my car. (07's have easy exit for steering column only enabled, not seats). The other day, I noticed when I opened the door, my seat clicked, and noticed it was trying to move back but was at the end of travel. When I get in the car, and stick the key in the ignition, the seat moves forward, but only a little bit, not to the memory position. If I hit my memory button, it then moves to the correct spot. I tried resetting position by moving the seat all the way forward and holding that position for 10 seconds, but that didn't work. It still acts like it doesn't know it's correct position, and hits end of travel before getting to the rearmost position.

I wonder if this sort of thing has anything to do with why Mercedes chose to eliminate the easy-entry feature for the seat in 2007?

interesting mine actually did fall off completely on both tracks. which then caused the seat to try to go off track. i wonder if only one is missing or something and that is why it acts funny . i would get a flashlight and look to see if both are on there if not and you don't see it you could steal one from the passenger until you can get another one.

btw also good job searching this is an old thread

Matt, I bet that is the case. I know for a fact that MB was trying desperately to improve their quality in the late 2000's. That included removing and disabling features.

Trey, thanks for the info. I'll crawl under there this weekend with a flashlight and see if I can find anything loose or missing. I wonder if my passenger side has those seats, as the forward and back is not powered like the driver's side.

Ok, I looked everywhere under my seat for those clips and I don't see them anywhere. Maybe they changed the late 203 seats? So, I did a little more investigating and found that my driver's power seat only has 2 1/4" of total travel front to back. The non-power passenger seat has 8" of total travel. When the seat hits the forward position, it hits very softly. When it hits the back, it clunks loud, and the lights dim, like it is hitting the over-current limit. Here is a pic of the position of the seat tracks in the full back position. I swear it used to move back further, and I can see wear marks in the track like it did. Is this the correct track position for full back?

I gotta hand it to you Trey, this thread helped me out last weekend! I think that's when it was! Either way, my passenger seat wasn't going all the way back, and it's never done that before. Also, while moving it forward, it made a funny clunk noise. Needless to say, I came across this thread which helped me identify, locate, and fix my problem! One of the two pieces you show in your first thread was not on the track, it was uctually loose on the track and was moving around as the seat was moving forward and backward. Anyhow, next time I'm in McLean there, I'll have to hit you up and get you a beer or something! I got family in McLean, so I sorta know the area!

so... have another seat problem. I was bored in the parking lot of work and had 20 minutes to kill. so i decided to look at my seat rails to see how bad they were and if they needed grease or a good cleaning. i move the seat all the way back and then forward to look. then as i i am putting it back to my normal driving position i get smoke from under my seat and the motor no longer works. I found the motor and it was really hot. after work i tried it again i got it to move about 1/2 inch then stop again. when i push the button i hear the click just like last time but that is it. I am almost 100% sure the motor is dead but was wondering if anyone knows if you have to remove the seat to replace it or anything about it. I found a PN 203-820-12-42 i think that is it so not to expensive but don't really know what would have smoked form it going. i also wonder if the tracks are messed up or something. i called a dealer right after it happened to get an estimate but have not heard back. any help would be great.

Trey - best to take the seat out & check all electrics. You should not have things smoking under your seats. The back/forward motion is supposed to have limiter switches. I think you worked this out earlier when the switch activators fell off.

Let me know if you need backrest diagrams etc. I left them out because you were only interested in front/rear movement.

so today after i did my oil change i finally fixed my burnt out seat motor. While looking at it to figure out what flexible screwdriver i need to buy I saw that if you can go 6 inches out from the screw or so you could get a driver in there. so i graved my extension and got the two torx screws out and the motor fell out lol. Put the new one in and it actually worked. So i was curious what died in the motor. it was not sized like i thought. I put 12 volts to it directly and it still did nothing i even bypassed the wiring. When it went out it was smoking so i guess something important melted or something. Whatever the case it works now i just have to clean the rails really well any suggestions. If anyone ever needs more detail i will gladly help out if is so easy with a long torx drive and some cutters to get the zip ties off. I was too exited that is was going so easy and on the phone with a friend listing to him complain about some girl to take pictures.

Trey, would you please take a picture of the motor (if visible, screws as well) that you replaced? Thanks.
