HELP Please!!! Alternator Problems!

Hello Everyone,

I have a 2002 C240 with about 125,000 miles on it. My alternator went out a couple days ago so i picked up a new one to replace it. I got the serpentine belt off and started to take off the top bolt, but it was super tight, so i left it and started to loosen the bottom bolt. I got the bottom bolt off easily, but the top didnt get any looser. I finally cracked the top one loose and got it out, but there was so much lock tite or some sort of sealer on the bolt that when it cracked free, it was the housing that the bolt screws into that cracked. The part where the bolt screws into broke into pieces so now there is no way to use the top bolt. Is that a piece that can be replaced or is it part of the entire engine? What should i do to fix this problem?

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I believe that boss is part of the block casting. If so, you're going to need a service that can reweld the parts back onto the block and drill and tap the bolt hole.

Wow, bummer. As a general rule, always use some liquid wrench or wd40 type stuff and let it sit before cranking on any bolt that haven't been touched for a long time.

On my car with the 4 cylinder, I was able to see that, that part is separate.
If you are in the US sign up for a free EPC account and you'll be able to see the exploded diagrams.
https://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/coverage.jsp

Here's a diagram I got from there when I did my alt. for the 4 banger.
I had to print screen and use paste to mspaint to save it.

If yours is like mine, you'll just need the replacement 'bracket', or whatever it's called. Don't give up hope until you've checked.

uh.....did you read my post?
Sign up for free EPC account?
Find the picture and pn?

Ah, OK having trouble?

Just takes a bit of doing..
put in your VIN #...
one of the menu's has a pn search.

Add an "A" to the front, punch in the pn of the
alternator, the drawing should come up, or it may take a bit of surfing the program to find the diagram...not always easy to find what you want but it is there. Take the time to play with it and learn.

If you can't figure it out, go to a dealer.
Lord knows what you'd have to do, to replace the bracket.
You could ask the service guys while you are there...
(ask the parts counter, if he's cool he'll find a mechanic to help answer your questions)

or...ha, send me your vin, paypal me 20 bucks and I'll find the pn and pic for you.

It appears that's a separate, replaceable, bracket. If so, you may be the luckiest guy of the week.

its not a replaceable bracket....its part of the timing case. The timing case is gonna run me like 400 bucks from the dealer...i really dont got that kind of money right now so im just gonna drill a hole through, jb weld the pieces back together, then run a longer bolt from behind and use a nut in the front...

I cant say for sure looking at these pictures but it looks like you can drill that thing through. If there is enough metal thread it. You can try to do it smaller diameter than original bold. If not then a nut with lock washer can help but its going to be a ***** to tight it.

yea, my initial idea is to drill it through...i never thought about trying to re thread it. i gotta look to see if there is enough metal to do that. regarding tightening it, im just going to run the bolt from behind and use a nut in the front, so its easier

That can do the trick. Just dont make it too tight, the bracket is already damaged
