How to prohibit the rust at rear-drive axle?
Hi, Guys:
This is 2006 C280 rear-drive only C280. Under the car, there has some kind of painting at rear-drive axle. I have noticed that the painting has crack and peeled away, thus a rust is developing. Do you guys have this problem? If have, what kind treatment do you put? Thanks.

Maybe a metallurgical engineer can chime in, but I thought I heard somewhere that the unprotected (ie just covered by that rough black paint) parts underneath the car are made of metal (possibly cast iron) that will accumulate surface rust but will not actually fatigue for the life of the car?
I noticed a while back that the differential casing on my car had some rust where the paint had chipped off. A couple of years later, it still looks the same.

I think that's absolutely true for heavy components under the car. I think that some just like keeping the bottom looking like the top. Me - I don't care. If it was protecting against thin metal perforation, then I would do everything to stop it.
