Very rough start-up/idle in the mornings or when cold and CEL?

I thought Drex's problem was that it took multiple cranks. Damn.

I just took it to VIPStatus. I didn't know they were like 5 minutes from my house now. Plus, they're an official SSR Dealer, so I figured if I need anything, they can probably get it for me. Thanks though! Get on aim during the day, foo!

Hi Phil - I'm with you now - The reason that I don't think that yours is a problem of mechanical balance of a fan or a broken engine mount is that it improves or seems variable. If a blower fan is out of balance it is out of balance & can't get better & if an engine mount is broken it's broken - can't improve. It would do no harm to check engine mountings & their integrity. Same goes for the engine cooling fan. The cooling fans on these cars do sometimes go into resonance or heterodyne but the cooling fan is not running at cold startup & makes a very noticeable Voorrr, voorrr, voorrrr resonant noise at high RPM - Merc could have done better here but fortunately the fan seldom runs at the critical RPM. Let's watch the progress of the other thread - Mark Leskovar is a tenacious fellow & enormously practical unlike yours truly that gets very tied up in the theoretical. His dog with a bone tenacity will probably untie that problem given time. We are not getting all the info on that thread - it is slowly becoming more comprehensive. I, like Mark, wonder if that car does not have a crankshaft pulley damper that is damaged & about to fly apart. How bad is your problem at present? - it must be very frustrating & the EECS code might be a red herring in the whole affair

I'm up for a Service B in 2,500 miles, so I'll have them check out all that.
With regards to the engine mounts, the dealer (actually glassjaw ) replaced them at 49K miles right when the warranty was up. I now have about 72k miles.
As for the CEL, it came back on on Wednesday and I cleared it yesterday. Oh well. I guess I'll just chronicle all the times I get it. This was probably the longest run without the CEL coming on for a while.
Thanks so much for all your help.

4 months after i got my car it started to shake very bad.. Like to the point were it would almost stall.. It was on and off it would do it some days others would be just fine.. Then the car threw a few codes... my good old buddy GLYN helped me a little bit of magic here and there..
The problem was that two wires just stopped working on the car at 72k miles
New Spark plugs
12X plugs 9.99 a plug
New Wires
250$ i think for the whole set

I can't believe that the CEL came back on just 5 days later (it came on on the 14th) from when I cleared it.
I'm not going to clear it and just bring it in for Service B with the CEL on.

maybe one of the wires is faulty. before the warranty expired I had the dealer went through ever plug wires and they had to replace like 4-5 of them because they didn't draw enough charge.
also glyn and john mentioned something about the 02 sensor.

yeah, I am still getting the code.
something weird happened today. my mom was driving the car and she told me that the car said "check gas cap see instructions manual" during the drive. when she pulled over, she checked the flap and the cap fell right off.
I got gas for it on Sat. and drove it around for a bit and I could have sworn that I put the cap on. is there any way that perhaps that it could have gotten loose? the cap is new.
maybe what is causing the EECS is the fuel filler neck like LILBENZ230.
now I wonder how difficult that will be to install.

Splinter kindly let me know that you guys had had a go at the TB & surrounds & there were signs the dealer had been in there. Let's hold thumbs on the cold start problem. This EECS is extremely frustrating - Either the new canister is suspect which I really doubt or they did not perform the smoke test with adequate rigor. You might have to tell them to do it again & properly this time. If the poor cold start comes back we might have to look at the mixture enrichment circuit & temperature sensor - let's cross that bridge when we come to it. - Good luck
Thanks!

I never had a rough start or rough idle in my car despite the EECS code and leaking fuel filler neck, so even if that is the case you have to have more than just that one thing. It's interesting about the gas cap, I can't imagine that there would be any way it could come loose.

I can't imagine how the gas cap could come loose??? The enrichment circuit/temp sensor could be playing up but it should give you a fuel trim code once fully warmed up.

what wires are u guys talking about...
i too have this idling issue (on cold start and when idling at say at a stop light) but no codes come up on mine. Going to do the throttle body cleaning this weekend (thanks for the DIY). Hopefully that helps.

I'm not sure if it's my wires though. the dealer said that they swapped them around--maybe they didn't check them properly
my car is at the dealer right now for Service B and for them to check what's up. I'll keep you guys updated.
hieracity, let us know what happens as well.
P.S. what's really funny is that I was on wifi at the dealership, but MBWorld is a blocked website there

will do...i'll try and take pic when im cleaning out the throttle body and give u guys feedback if it helped or not.
hahaha
the ignition coil wires (the wires that connect to the spark plugs).

I'm on the phone with the dealer. They said it's the same fault code and they've tested everything and they don't know what's going on... Smoke test, purge valve, charcoal canister, gas cap, etc.
They want more time with it. They want to clear the code and see what codes come back. I told them that I already have done it and have it well documented. They also want to get the shop foreman involved as well.
They're not charging me and they're giving me the loaner (Camry) for another day, so I said that's ok, please check it and please do a check when it's cold too.
Man, WTF is wrong with the car?!?!?

Tell these guys that their lack of diagnostic ability should not be at their expense. Maybe the time has come to try another dealer.

So close!
I read this whole thread hoping I could find an answer to my own problem. Mine is also a cold start issue. It misfires, runs rough and stalls in the morning and seems to clear up after a few minutes. I have also used a scanner and pulled a P1235 code, fuel pump control out of range. Any thoughts or ideas? Is there a fuel pump controller? I replaced it with a known good one and still the same.
