SUNROOF

I have an '05 C230 SS, and need a little guidance with my sunroof. If I press and then release the button to close it automatically, it will close and then reopen about about 4". I have to hold the button in the close position in order for it to stay shut.

I heard the term "out-of-sync," but not sure how I re-sync it. If I remember correctly this happened once before and the dealer fixed it along with replacing some small parts on the side of the sunroof opening.

Anyhow, it's happening again, and I don't feel like going to the dealer for such a small thing, so any instructions you could provide on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Manually close it with the switch, then keep pressing on the switch for about 10 seconds. That should re-synch it.

That happened to mine just a few months ago. I also was wondering what the heck was going on.. Luckly it was time for Service A. When I brought it in the service guy checked everything in the car incl the sunroof. I asked why the sunroof was doing that. He said it needed to be lubricated?? Keeping the sunroof open most time builds dust and debris on the rails. When you try to close the sunroof automatically it senses some sort of blockage or some difficulty closing so it reopens. Kind of like a safety feature. if your hand was in the opening and it sensed that i could not close smoothly it reopens. That's what the dude said..
Anyway, Try cleaning out the rails and lubricating them. See if that works!

Keep us posted. Since your service guy said something different. I'm interested to know if he was telling the truth.

I took mine in for some other stuff, and they said that the sunroof was out of sync. I had tried re-syncing it with this method and it didn't work.

I was holding the switch all the way (holding it on the automatic close position) Maybe I shouldn't have pushed it that far...

+1 to what BlackC280 said. I had the same issue with mine, brought it to the dealer for Service A, and they mentioned the same exact thing. They lubricated the rails, and cleaned a few things up. Haven't had a problem since.

Well, problem solved. I rarely use the sunroof, so lubrication and dirt wasn't the problem. It was just out of sync and here's how you re-sync it. From the closed position, open the sunroof all the way keeping your finger on the switch. When it is fully opened, continued to hold the button for 5-10 seconds. Then close the sunroof all the way and continue holding the button for the 5-10 second period again. Then open the tilt function and hold the button (you guessed it for 5-10 seconds) and finally close the tilt and continue to hold the button again.

Basically, you have to put the sunroof in all four of its positions and hold the button in each position to "teach" the sunroof where it's at.

Again, thanks for all your help on this and other questions I've had.

Glad you resolved the problem.

I guess the newer the car, the more complicated the fix. Remind me not to buy another new Benz.

Ahh, I didn't do the up/down on the tilt.

Just to clarify, you hold the switch all the way, past the auto open/close stops?

If I hold my switch forwards to close after being open in slide mode it goes past the stop point and into tilt mode !!!
So how can I do a re-sync in all 4 positions?
Model is 2002 elegance

My car had this problem and no amount of re-synching would help. The dealership had to "adjust" some "value" by ".1" with SDS. That's what it says on my paperwork and I haven't had this issue since. It's been months.
