My Truth with Tein Basics (and lower in general)
#26
UHOH.. I just ordered a set on Sunday. Should be here any day now.
Does anyone have any tips on how to prevent or at least delay this issue?
I put Tein S.Tech springs on my car this past summer, and now my stock shocks are completely dead and the car handles like crap. I was happy with the handling when i first installed them. The rear sits fine right now with barely any rubbing.
Im not planning on slamming the rear, I just want the front a little lower so the fender gaps even out. And I'm excited for the increased handling performance.
Maybe if I don't slam the rear early on, the rear wont get as F-ed up as quick?
Can you guys with the Basics at least say a few things positive about them to make me feel better?!

Positive: Until they're installed, it's likely that you can return them.

Tru - This is a most informative thread - I concur with splinter - we need more like it.
Goes to show that suspension design & set-up is no cake walk. What amazes me is the change in spring rate with use. This is a materials & quenching problem. All springs suffer minor settling - but then they should settle.
The alarm bells should have started to ring & probably did when you could not set the ride height evenly, new - & had to resort to uneven adjustment that Tein said was normal . Discounting damper stiction that could be checked by bouncing the car - this is absolute nonesense. Imagine if an OE spring manufacturer provided such springs to the OEMs where you have no adjustment to talk of - half the cars on the road would be riding around as though they had two bags of cement hanging over one rear wheel.
Excellent thread

So i should really bring them back?
I always noticed everyone always recommending Tein basics, and so many members have/had them installed.
Now no one can come forward with anything positive?? DAMMMN.
I ordered them last week and still havent received them yet.
Should i save myself the hassle, return the basics and just buy Konis?

Sounds like a good plan if you don't want to be doing the job over in 20,000 miles time.

It is clear that Tein suffer QC problems with the variable experience people have.

Dammit TruTaing, if only you have put this thread out a year ago. Then you could have saved me the exact same trouble I'm going through now on my car. 1 year / 16,000km and I experienced exactly the same problems you did. I've already raised my rear end 3 times since the car goes too low when I have people or groceries in the car. I think the springs are not stiff enough because with any little weight in the back it drops at least 1.5-2 inches which isnt good when you're running 18x9.5s/255s. I've also had problems with the back being taller on one side than the other.
I think its good that other mbworld members know how Tein treats their customers and the lack of quality product they produce.

Its disappointing to see that more people have experienced this than I originally thought... only because if yall have experienced it BEFORE me, I wish some of ya'll would have posted about it. Now that this thread is here, I'm hoping we don't hear any more issues of the sort from future users and/or those of us who have had issues raise a big enough of an issue w/ Tein for them to justify fixing the problem.
BTW, I have only really seen / heard of this problem on the v6s (m112) and its always the rear passenger suspension that initially causes the problems. I don't know if the m272s can/will have similar issues, but I imagine the m112 and m272 have similar weight distribution, so they may potentially face the same issues. I think the first person I talked to about my Tein issues was Drex, but I realized his car is a 230k and thus different in weight from mine... (thanks for the help Drex, where you been?!)
Cappa:
My two knocking sounds up front (both fixed now):
I found that if I extended my front adjustable sway bar end links too long and the front of my car is as low as it is now that the end of the front sway bar would actually HIT a control arm if I hit big dips. Solution: [I] shorten the adjustable end link a bit and/or raise the car up a bit in the front.
Additionally, when I was *much* lower up front, I just found myself rubbing against the strut when I hit *big* bumps. clunk clunk.
The tein front suspension has been great - minus my "experimenting." The rear is a completely different story...
