My c180 coupe central locking with the key and radio are also not working, the windows are tinted if that makes any difference. What is the solution?

Ask the shop if the tint is metalized... And tell them you need non metalized because radio frequency is blocked. Or they could have blown your antenna amplifier with water. Or cut your antenna wires... Read the thread.

I went back to the tint place and they said it is non metalized tint and didnt cut the wires as they cut the tint from the outside, the only possibility left is water got into the antenna amplifier. Does that mean I would need to buy the part direct from mercedes then? £330 they quoted for it.

Please make sure that the tint is not metalised. Is the tint applied externally on your rear screen?

You need to buy the genuine antenna amp. You can possibly save money by buying online from the US from one of these.

i wouldn't buy it... i would just explain to them that you had it working when you went there.. then all of a sudden it doesn't work and your mechanic said it usually happens when you get your windows tinted because the people do one of those three things. i would nicely go back to the tint shop and have them take off the covers so that you prove to them you didn't touch it because "you don't know how" then inspect the wires very carefully and tell them that the amp must have been blown with the water if the tint is non metalized and that most likely they blew it with water and have them replace it. they may also be lying about the tint being non metalized because they don't want to replace it.. but they would much sooner replace your tint then your amp... i'm having my shop replace the tint this saturday and if it still doesn't work then it's going to be ALLLL BAD.

This sounds like a water problem but please check with the tint manufacturer whether the tint is metalised. Half of these tinting shops talk crap. I would still check wiring into the rear screen. They may have damaged it with a squeegy when applying the tint.

Good luck!

Damnit, I just got a tint and this started happening... Glyn, do you have some info about the potential wires that may be damaged?

Thanks,

Tru - If you are sure it's not a metallic tint.

It's one of the following if all smart keys are working:

They have damaged the screen itself
They have cut the wires where they exit the screen center top
The sticky pad has come loose center top of screen
They have got water in the antenna amplifier behind the LHS C pillar cover & blown it.

Good luck!

Mine works... Just very randomly. Sounds like its just a bit sketchy - probably loose. They definitely did not install a metallic tint as I was sure to avoid that material. Ill have to take a better look at it when I have a chance.

Thanks for the info!

I hate that this ever happened to me... The tint shop eventually installed a new "used" amplifier since they blew the old one.. And it works so much worse than my old on :/

Fuse #8 and Remote locking with key
I can confirm that fuse #8 in the trunk controls the RF receiver that works with remote locking/unlocking of the car. It also affects the radio signal as it must have a signal booster for the radio from the rear window antenna. I was looking for a possible bad fuse and removed the #8 fuse and replaced it in the wrong slot. This caused me to not be able to remotely lock and unlock the car except through the direct pointing method at the driver's door handle receiver. I also experienced the scratchy radio reception I saw someone else refer to. Upon doing a bit more research I saw the reference to #8 fuse and upon checking realized i had left the slot open with no fuse. This solved both problems.

Where should I be telling the installer to be careful and conservative with their squeegee when installing tints? I'm assuming that this is in reference to installing tints to the back window.

Thanks.

Quote: BTW - this problem is sometimes caused by a poor antenna earth or damaged antenna wires when tints are done.
Same here, My C230 Coupe 2002 has the same problem. It started immediately after my rear window was tinted, my alarm stopped working. Now it seems to randomly work, about a 1/5 ratio depending on the time of day it seems.

From what I've read this is due to the tint messing with the antenna wires in the rear window that are used to transmit the radio signal to the remote. Both remote batteries changed, all fuses checked, car battery replaced, it must be the tint, too coincidental.

After reading multiple threads about tint and this problem it must be the problem.
