loud vibrations in drive and reverse

loud vibrations in drive and reverse
All,
As of late I've been experiencing an issue where when I back up or when I'm sitting idle at a stop light I have this loud vibration in my car. It almost sounds like when you have a back window down and the front ones rolled up and you start to drive fast. The car is an '03 CLK55 AMG. When I took it to the mechanic he informed me it was the rubber engine mounts that are wearing away now the engine is starting to rest on the frame. He informed me the cost is going to be about $650. I trust this mechanic as I've been with him for awhile now and he's always taken care of me. I just wanted to run it by the forum and get a second opinion if this sounds correct and if the price is reasonable for that job? Look forward to your responses before I drop it off tomorrow.

First i would post this in the clk forums but from my limited knowledge of engine mounts is that when they wear it can cause the drive train to move which I guess could cause the vibration. i do know that some members have said that their cars were shifting out of gear and stuff which i would assume is because the engine/transmission is moving. i would also assume your car has some miles on it which would suggest that the engine mounts would be bad. btw on the c class from what i have read it is a pretty easy diy which could save you alot of money. if you search i am sure someone in has posted about engine mount problems.

I had the same problem on my CLK320. It's one of the more common problems in the car. They replaced my for no charge, even though I was out of warranty. Talk to your dealer about it or think about doing it yourself.
