2001 C240 ESP control module
Hello,
My C240 is in desperate need of a new ESP control module. The dealer quoted me over $1800 to install a new one, which I am not thrilled about. Does anybody have a suggestion on how to replace this stupid module without having to spend that amount? Can the installation be DIYed easily? I've tried searching this subject, but found very little useful information. Thanks in advance!

To start with you can install it yourself. There are people in the US that can repair these - Let me search & revert.

I just went through this drill a couple of months ago. The possible two modules cost $125 and $565. They are easily accessible under the trunk mat between the spare tire well and the rear seat back. Half hour installation time if you don't know what you're doing (first time) and 5 minutes for an experienced person.

Check out BBA Remanufactering or Module Masters. Both reman ABS/ESP modules for a fraction of new module cost. Both have decent info on their websites. The modules are easy on an off.
If you do go this route....While the module is out for repair, remember you will have no ABS or stability/traction control. Your brakes will work as normal w/o the abs, so be careful.

Either way, probably a good idea to take it easy if the module is out for repair

I can't see how ABS and ESP would not be tied together since ESP piggybacks ABS sensors. Can someone verify that Mercedes is different, you can lose ESP without losing ABS?

You can manually turn off ESP and it doesn't affect ABS. They share the wheel sensors but I'm not sure about any others.

Now I realize what I was thinking. It's ABS that if you lose, you also lose ESP. They do share wheel sensors but they'd also have to share the actuator/modulator under hood right? It makes sense now that you can lose ESP without losing ABS just not the other way around. Got it. LOL

I got my car from being serviced from the dealer this morning, and after getting home from work, I immediately went to the trunk to yank the defective unit. I've yet to drive the car since uninstalling it, but I did turn the engine on afterward. Immediately, the ESP and SRS warning messages appeared. Therefore, my traction control (as expected) and airbags aren't functional. There was no ABS warning message.
The unit is black and manufactured by Motorola. It has a large white sticker listing the parts numbers and such, as well as an orange warning sticker. It was mounted by two brass hex bolts, and had a large wire/wiring harness and seperate coaxial wire attached to it. Did I remove the correct unit?

We need to know what codes your car is throwing. The ESP is effected by many modules. Your dealer has obviously diagnosed. Ask them which module they believe is faulty and codes they read.

I have a 2002 CLK320. I noticed in this thread someone mentioned BBA Remanufacturing. I can vouch for this company. I have my odometer led's blinking and not working. BBA reconditioned the whole assembly for under $200... and it's better than new. They were very prompt in their repair and shipping time, less than one week.

Just want to update what's going on with this. I had an indie shop pull the codes a couple days ago, and it's the lateral acceleration sensor (part no. 163 542 06 18) that needs to be replaced. As it turns out, this part is problematic on a few Mercedes models. It costs about $100 bucks for a new one, so I'm happy about that. LOL at the dealer for telling me it's a "module" that needed to be replaced for $1800. They also told me my rear main seal was in "dire" need of replacing, when it actually wasn't (they would've charged me $1200 for that). It was Mercedes Palm Beach that gave me these ridiculous estimates, so I'll avoid them from now on.

See post #3 in this thread. Part #163 542 06 18 is the forward motion sensor. Buy it and do it yourself.....I hope that's the one. The yaw sensor is the larger one next to it.

Mercedez Benz c240 2002, color=Silver, Gasoline
Hello All,
Thanks
Mercedes Acceleration Sensor; ESP Lateral Acceleration: what is the function of this sensor?
My 2002 c240 brakes by itself occasionally and it seems that it is the front brake and I get the ESP light on afterward. Not sure, which sensor to replace? and where all the ESP sensors are located in the trunk? Thanks
