Sounds like a diesel.
I have a 2005 C230 sport sedan and starting two or three days ago the car would sound exactly likes a big diesel truck for two or three seconds after starting the engine. Does anyone know what this could be?

There is a TSB out for a rattling on start-up. My car did this and the dealership replaced some "internal cam magnets" according to the paperwork. The SA told me these were not the ones on the front of the engine. It says on my work order "replaced internal cam magnets with updated parts" and diagnosis "rattling on startup".
That said, these cars sound fairly ridiculous at start-up regardless. But if your noise is something new then it's probably the same issue.
