Good - I thought the lack of adaption was wiping out your OBDII port. I've seen this before.

1997 E320 Transmission problem

Soo I am having a problem . I am doing my ex-wife a favor and working on her 97 E320 with a 722.6 tranny and have encountered some issues. After her original transmission went bad (front pump went out and kept going into limp mode) I installed a known good tranny from the wrecking yard out of the same year/model car along with a new filter and MB synthetic fluid through the dip tube using the MB fluid level tool. After installation the transmission will not shift out of 1st (or 2nd..not sure which one its in) and the check engine light light is on giving off a code of P0730. That code reads as "improper gear ratio" on the web but the dealer told me that the book just states that it indicates there are codes that need to be read in the Transmission Control Unit which I didnt read yet. I have heard different stories and do not know what to believe...one shop says I may need to have them clear the codes and initialize the software to take it out of limp mode....another says that the valve body in the new trans may be a different version than the control unit...and another said that solenoid plate or something might be bad. Like I said I am doing this as a favor for my ex because she is very short on money and couldnt afford the labor costs for the tranny install and now we are still in the same boat with no real answer on what is going on. Any ideas out there? What sounds like the likely culprit? What should I do first? BTW, when the old tranny was in it would work fine when it was cold shifting through all the gears, but once it heated up it the front pump would start grinding and then it would go into limp mode and eventually wouldnt move until it cooled off again. Now it doesnt shift at all cold or hot and it also bangs into gear when putting it into DRIVE or REVERSE.

My advice would be to first start at the beginning of this thread and read all the way through it.

Also, while the car may be 10 years older.. the 722.6 transmission has been around a while. Could be the same issues. Just sayin'.

If this is a known good unit & the TCU is fine then you need to go to the dealer & have it adapted with the STAR DAS. The transmission is at present in limp mode. Once everything is "recognised" and set up it should be fine. Find a pet dealer that does not want to rip you off for this service or an Indy with a STAR or Snap On Solus who knows what they are doing.

Just to follow up with everyone...I took it to an independent shop that had the right equipment and they reset the codes and re-adapted the tranny to the existing module. Everything now works as it should! Thanks!

Ok so I guess I am not completely out of the water here on this one....have a seperate issue that I didnt mention after the tranny install. Everything works great except that there is about a 6-7 second delay before the tranny engages after shifting to "drive" or "reverse". This was a used transmission from a reputable supplier. The fluid is MB synthetic and is at the proper level as well. The car drives and shifts great besides this issue, any idea what is going on?

Does it throw any transmission codes? If not the first thing a dealer would do is reflash the software - If this fails it's likely something is sluggish in the valve body.

Well if you remember, it wouldnt shift from first because it was in "limp" mode and needed to be adapted. I had everything reflashed and taken care of and the shop is actually the one that told me about the delay. With that being said, no there are no codes! What do you think I should do?

Did they just adapt. Or did they delete & reflash the latest software?

The shop actually just reset all the codes and went through the adaptation process. I just spoke to them and thye told me there isnt much that can be done in the way of reflashing software on that year and that it wasnt uncommon to have a delay on the tranny engagement. Any ideas or should I just deal with it the way it is? s it a common thing you have heard of on the 97 E320s with the 722.6?

What the shop I think is saying is that they don't have the software - only the dealer. The 722.6 had many SW upgrades in it's early years as the 722.9 is having now. There is certainly a delay when selecting drive or reverse on these boxes - but not 5-6 secs.

Suspect if it's been unused for a while. That's too long a delay. That's a low fluid symptom as well.

C Class W203 Estate
I have a 2003 w203 c270 cdi. There is no dipstick suplied on this model although the tube is present. Gear box oil level is critical,DONT Overfill. If level is low and after a long vigourous drive mine sometimes sticks in 2nd gear this is the normal default position. My hand book says if this happens stop the car, engage park and remove ignition key then restart.
