Towing C240, disconnect drive shaft?
Putting it on a car dolly and towing it behind my SUV for 1300 miles. Is it an easy job to disconnect the drive shaft? Any other advice before I do this in a few weeks?

Yea and taking the front end off so it doesn't get messed up over 1300 miles will be just as easy.
Plus the fact that it isn't the recommended way to do and not the safest. Can I do this with your kids in the SUV instead of mine?

I see folks towing cars backwards and forwards. The steering column locks. But if all this is a concern, why not just buy a small trailer for it?

The steering column does lock, but it is also recommended that you use something else to secure the wheel and not just count on the lock. Your advice was a little lacking to just tell me to just lock the wheel.
Plus, who was hostile? Just pointed out some facts. Sorry if you are so sensitive to that when the comment you made wasn't even helpful or a suggestion in the first place. Your comment was about a light bulb over my head. I guess I should have been more like this for that comment

Perhaps you should work on your reading comprehension. I asked about taking off the drive shaft and if it was an easy job. Then if there was any other advice. I didn't ask about loading the car backwards, doing damage to my front end and worrying about a good way to secure the wheel.

As for securing the steering wheel, I have seen tow drivers take a cord, tie it to the steering wheel and tie it up to the frame of the door. Cant say that is the right option, but it is how I have seen it done. As for removing the drive shaft, someone on this board was asking about the flex discs. That post will show an exploded diagram of the Drive Shaft.
Worst case scenario, take it to the dealer or an independent, have them do it, and have the car picked up from the dealer.

A couple of years ago I was in SA shooting commercials with the then pre-production handmuster W204. The shots were of two actors driving through traffic while talking. The way we do do this is to couple the car to the camera car and tow it through the streets. Being a smart American, I warned that the driveshaft should be disconnected to avoid transmission problems. I took the bolts out of the rear guibo, and left the shaft in the car. We dragged that car all over Cape Town. When we were done, I put the bolts back in the guibo. The car wrangler started the car to put it on the transporter. He drove about 10 feet and the guibo split into a handful of pieces. Evidently the replacement of the driveshaft is not plug-and-play.

We should learn from this. Mark everything carefully to ensure you reinstall as it came off. BTW the guibo is the flex joint/disc items 265 & 270 dependant on which design is fitted. Until educated by johnand I was not au fait with the term "guibo" for the couplings to the GB output shaft & diff pinion shaft.
