I think some one else had the same problem in this forum. They coudn't close their gas cap at the gas station. You might wan't to take it in and get a new one put on.

I think I've heard of this problem before too. Try doing a search and see if you find anything. I think you have to do something with the clips on the cap. I guess they can move out of place and then it won't fit right.

You guys ever notice the fuel cap is attached to the car via a flimsy, stringy, piece of rubber elastic? That piece of rubber looks like it will crack and snap over time.

The cap won’t go back on, if the Octane doesn't meet the requirement. It’s a smart car, I tell you…….

Just kidding.

I think you need to align something in cap. look around it. If I can find it, I will post it here.

well, the check engine light came on yesterday along with a red display in the dash saying loose filler cap. i went to the dealer and he fixed it in two seconds. just aligned the white plastic tabs with the metal ones and it snapped right in. he told me the light will go away once you drive. well, it hasn't. how can i reset it myself? disconnect the battery? what do i have to do to set up my windows and everything if i disconnect it????

I had the same problem one evening at a gas station. Look inside the gas cap and you will see two white flanges that rotate at the center of the cap. Those white flanges should be aligned with two locking spaces at the edge of the cap. When I had the problem, I found the white flanges had come out of alignment. Just snap the flanges back in place--that's what I did--and the gas cap should close on the filler hole.

Yes, it is supposed to go away, but it takes some time. Give it a week or two before you take it into the dealer. Hopefully it will be gone within a week.

They could have reset it, but that requires writing up a ticket and taking it into the shop and hooking up the computer. It was much easier for them to give you the 2-second fix and get you on your way. But don't worry, it will go away.

on another note, that cord that attaches the cap to the car bugs the hell out of me.. its just barely long enough to let you slip the cap to the holder/hanger in the fuel filler door..

but there isnt enuff clearance between the hanger and the gas tank opening IMO.. i hate it when i put the nozzle in and it knocks off the cap from the hanger, banging it against the body panel

Do you know that you have to put it in the hanger and then push it back and it kinda snaps in. It seems to be held in pretty good after you do that.

Gas Cap probs?

Anyone else have any issues with their gas caps? Mrs. EDJ was driving the '03 C320 yesterday and when she went to gas up, neither she nor the gas station guy could get the gas cap to go back on properly. After 15 minutes she called MB Roadside Assistance. They told her that it happens occasionally and that it was safe to drive without the gas cap on.

She drove it to the dealership who spent all of 2 minutes doing something to the alignment of the gas cap threads (???)

Anyone else have this problem?

EDJ

Don't you get an error message with the cap off? It's been discussed before:

Exclamation Fuel Filler Cap

I was driving this morning and i got a red error message saying my fuel filler cap was loose. My yellow light was blinking so i pulled over opened the flap and the cap was off. the pegs were out in the locked position and i had to use two flat head screw drivers to pry the pegs up so i could turn the plastic base underneath in order to screw back on the cap. i fuelled up Monday and i had 3/4 of a tank. I drive 10miles round trip to work and car pool with my brother so i dont use much gas during the week. anyhow kinda wierd, has this happened to anyone before. im thinking maybe i didnt screw it on so both pegs were locked in and only one was. anyhow just curious.

First time I've heard of that one. Haven't had any cap problems on my coupe. Maybe it just a matter of making sure that you have the cap well centered and evenly distributed as you twist it back on after refueling. Maybe one of the pegs, like you said, didn't lock and the rest did.
